The \u201ccover\u201d is not the same thing as the title page, and you will get points deducted if one or the other is missing:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Title of Report<\/p>\n<p> by (Student\u2019s Name)<\/p>\n<p> Technical Writing, Section No.\u00a0(find out your section #, it will be on your course schedule)<\/p>\n<p> Semester (Spring\/Fall\/Summer) &amp; Year<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Basically remember that the \u201ccover\u201d page should have the above information on it, whether or not you also include a graphic. Also, technically, the cover page is not numbered, but since you are submitting this report online, it is okay if you number it as page 1. <\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Follow the format below when putting together your formal report:\u00a0(see example Formal Reports in Ecampus) <\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0FRONT MATTER&#8211;12 point type (no larger, no smaller, except for headings)<\/p>\n<p> (Technically and traditionally, the front matter is numbered with lower case Roman numerals, but it is difficult to explain how to transition from Roman numerals to regular Arabic numerals in the middle of a report when students are using so many different versions of Word, so you may simply number your pages with regular numerals from beginning to end.) <\/p>\n<p> The following items of front matter all go on separate pages: <\/p>\n<p> \u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Title Page&#8211;The title page is\u00a0NOT the same thing as the\u00a0cover\u00a0of the report; both are required.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Letter of Transmittal\u2014(Use correct letter format.)<\/p>\n<p> \u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Informative Abstract&#8211;The abstract should be at least one well-developed paragraph long and single spaced.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Table of Contents&#8211;Be sure that your headings match those used in the text of your report.<\/p>\n<p> \u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0List of Illustrations, Figures, Tables or Graphics&#8211;The List of Illustrations is\u00a0optional, that is, you don\u2019t have to include it, but you may.\u00a0\u00a0See Graphics Assignment Instructions for more specific details on graphics requirements.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> II.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Body of Reports&#8211;12 point type (no larger, no smaller, except for headings\u2014no bigger than 16 pt. type for headings)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Minimum: 12 double-spaced pages, 20 maximum; counting starts with the executive summary\u00a0(I WILL count your pages). 5 points off per missing page. <\/p>\n<p> *With the front matter, bibliography, and end matter you should have at least 20 pages total. <\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> 1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Executive Summary&#8211;The summary (at least one, well-developed paragraph) is OPTIONAL.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> 2. Glossary&#8211;This is also OPTIONAL, and only one page of a glossary will count in the total number of required pages.\u00a0\u00a0Your glossary must list at least 5 terms if you want it counted as a page of text (out of the 12 required).\u00a0\u00a0You may want to indicate in the text the words you define in the glossary, perhaps with asterisks* or\u00a0italics\u00a0or boldfacing.\u00a0\u00a0*Do not include in your glossary words that really don\u2019t need defining, like \u201ccomputer\u201d\u00a0or \u201cloan.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> 3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Introduction&#8211;Have at least one, well-developed paragraph for your introduction.<\/p>\n<p> 4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Discussion or Body of Report&#8211;Double-space reports, and include headings to divide <\/p>\n<p> sections.\u00a0\u00a0Include graphics in your report, handbook or manual&#8211;see Graphics Assignment following <\/p>\n<p> these formal report instructions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> III.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0DOCUMENTATION<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Since this project is partly a research paper,\u00a0you are required to use and document sources (see type and number below), even if you are compiling an employee handbook or manual.\u00a0\u00a0Use either MLA or APA documentation style.\u00a0\u00a0Do not use any style other than MLA or APA.\u00a0\u00a0If you \u201cnumber\u201d your sources on the bibliography or references page, you are not using MLA or APA.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t consider what you might have used in another class; this is the requirement for this class, and points will be deducted if you don\u2019t use MLA or APA.<\/p>\n<p> 1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Bibliography\u2014A page which lists alphabetically by author\u2019s last name (or title if no author) all the sources used in compiling your report; most of you know that already.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> *The most important thing to remember about your bibliography is that it must be alphabetized; this helps the reader find a source quickly.\u00a0\u00a0You don\u2019t want the reader to have to search all through your bibliography to find a source.\u00a0\u00a0Also, websites must have titles so you can alphabetize them (if they don\u2019t have authors).\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t try to alphabetize with a URL.\u00a0 *Very Important: Whatever your source, what you put in the in-text citation (in parentheses) MUST be how that source is alphabetized on your bibliography.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Specific source requirements are as follows:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> You are required to have *consulted\u00a0for and\/or cited in your Formal Report at least\u00a05\u00a0sources, including the following types:<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> @ least two periodical articles\u00a0(periodical = scholarly journal, magazine, or newspaper&#8211;not online websites that claim to be e-magazines or such, not PDF reports\u2014you can use PDFs, but you also need to have the two periodical articles as described above; the point is to learn to access the library databases)<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0*A website like a government page is NOT a periodical.\u00a0\u00a0You may use all the websites you want, but if you don\u2019t have the two books and two periodical articles, you will get points deducted.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0@ least two books\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Your technical writing textbook (or any technical writing textbook) doesn\u2019t count in this requirement.<\/p>\n<p> You may use e-books, that is, books that can be accessed online.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0*Consulted\u00a0means you have viewed the source and have it listed on your bibliography, but you have not cited\u2014paraphrased, summarized, or quoted directly\u2014that source in your report; if you do paraphrase the source (put it in your own words), or summarize from it or quote it, you must cite it.\u00a0\u00a0As a minimum requirement you must cite something from both a periodical article (periodical as described above) and a book in the text of your report (not graphics but main text), and of course, you must cite all information taken from outside sources.\u00a0\u00a0You will be penalized for not citing sources for information in your report that clearly do not reflect \u201ccommon knowledge\u201d (common knowledge does not have to be cited).<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> In addition to the requirements listed above, you may (it\u2019s optional) also use interviews as sources.\u00a0\u00a0An example bibliographical citation for an interview is as follows (name, title or credentials, interview, date):<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Bush, George.\u00a0\u00a0U. President.\u00a0\u00a0Interview.\u00a0\u00a03 Dec. 2005.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Within the text you would cite the source this way: (Bush).<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> 2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Within the text\u2014Be sure to document all information taken from outside sources using superscript notations that refer to a page titled \u201cNotes,\u201d or use footnotes, or document sources with parenthetical documentation, for example as in MLA style:<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This rare species has been known to reside in Louisiana, as well as in Texas (Dees 61).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> No matter what subject you have chosen, you MUST document information in the text, and by text I do not mean graphics; I mean written material, sentences and paragraphs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Again, these research requirements are minimal, so there is no excuse for not meeting them.\u00a0\u00a0IMPORTANT:\u00a0\u00a0It does not matter if you think your topic does not need sources; this assignment is a \u201cresearch\u201d paper, and research is required\u2014both a bibliography AND sources cited in the paper.<\/p>\n<p> A word about quotes\u2014Make sure that your quotations have attributive tags (see below). <\/p>\n<p> Correct Example of how to use an attributive tag<\/p>\n<p> Somers stated that \u201c[t]his rare species has been known to reside in Louisiana, as well as in Texas\u201d (Dees 61).<\/p>\n<p> *The attributive tag is \u201cSomers stated that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Incorrect Example (no attributive tag)<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThis rare species has been known to reside in Louisiana, as well as in Texas\u201d (Dees 61).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> When you don\u2019t put attributive tags with your quotes, they seem out of context, and it can also be difficult to determine who is stating the quoted material.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> IV.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0END MATTER <\/p>\n<p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Include the following items as end matter:<\/p>\n<p> Appendix A: Copy of the GRADED proposal for this assignment.\u00a0\u00a0NOTICE that I am requiring here the \u201cProposal\u201d assignment (NOT the Progress Report + Rough Draft).\u00a0\u00a0Also notice that I am requiring the graded copy\u2014the one with my red grading marks on it\u2014not a clean copy of it and not a corrected copy.\u00a0\u00a0I require the graded proposal in order to quickly confirm that you have not changed topics.\u00a0 Points will be deducted if you don\u2019t attach the graded proposal with my grading marks on it as Appendix A.<\/p>\n<p> 2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Other Appendices as needed\u2014OPTIONAL<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Appendices must be labeled by placing an extra page in front of\u00a0each appendix item\u00a0which introduces it with the words \u201cAppendix A\u201d or \u201cAppendix A: Proposal,\u201d etc. or with \u201cAppendix A\u201d typed at the top of the first page of the appendix itself.\u00a0\u00a0List appendices in the Table of Contents, or refer to appendices somewhere in the body of the report, so your reader knows they exist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> **This assignment also requires graphics\u2014see Graphics Instructions for that information.<\/p>\n<p> After I grade the formal report, I will email you a copy of the grade form explaining how points were deducted. If you follow all of these assignment instructions + your report is generally well written, you should make a good grade on it. <\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Save your work regularly.
