It is my intention that you learn how to assess the quality of a source and integrate it meaningfully into your work. These are skills that you will likely find useful in your other studies as well. This assignment is designed to familiarize you with the wealth of scholarly resources available in the age of the internet and to get you thinking about your final essay.

Step 1: Read the instruction sheet for Assignment #3: Final Research Essay and decide which symphony and approach you would like to research.

Step 2: Compile a bibliography of 4 resources related to your chosen piece. Your bibliography must be formatted in Chicago Bibliography Style (not author-date Chicago Style), and the entries must be listed in alphabetical order by author’s last name. Note the difference between the format of a bibliography entry and the format of a footnote. They are not identical.

Your bibliography must include:

1 book or e-book

1 scholarly journal article (not a newspaper or magazine article)

1 entry from Oxford Music Online/Grove Music Online

1 audio recording (from Naxos Music Online, Apple Music, Spotify, etc. not YouTube)

Step 3: Write an annotation after each source. Your annotation should be 3-5 sentences long and should not only outline what the source is about, but how you intend to use it in your research. In the case of the recording, you may want to address why you chose that particular recording, or something that is discussed in its CD liner notes.

Step 4: Based on a preliminary reading of your sources, write a short research statement (2-3 sentences) which outlines the way you intend to approach your topic with respect to the canon. Will you be looking at the historical (i.e.: political, cultural, social) context of the symphony? Reception? Compositional style? Relationship to the composer’s other works? If you are comfortable, you may also want to include a more technical harmonic analysis of the work. There are many ways to approach the final essay—choose a method that works for you.

This is just a preliminary research statement. If your ideas change throughout the course of the term, that is fine. This assignment will be an opportunity for you to receive some feedback on your method and resources in the early stages of your research process. If you already know what your thesis will be, you may provide it in lieu of a research statement.

Please consult the Chicago Manual of Style for music sources (posted on Quercus) when formatting your bibliography. Marks will be deducted for citations that are improperly formatted.

MUS302: Assignment 2: Annotated Bibliography/Research Statement (10%) Due: November 2, 2022, by 11:59pm EST (submission portal will close at 11:59pm EST on November 7, 2022) Submission Attempts: 2 before the deadline One of the learning outcomes for this course is the development of fundamental music research skills.
