This assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to explore the area of perception. The assignment is expected that through your efforts you will expand your knowledge beyond the information provided in the textbook, notes and class lectures. You will have a clearer understanding of the role perception plays in everyday communication. <\/p>\n
There are several ways you can gather information on your topic. You can use some of the material in the textbook, but you should also explore other sources. Observation, library material, and the internet are some of the options you have for this assignment. <\/p>\n
Your assignment must thoroughly discuss the following: <\/p>\n
Define perception in detail. <\/p>\n
Describe in detail the perception process and its stages. <\/p>\n
How perception effects interpersonal communication. <\/p>\n
Perceptual barriers are our own preferences, values, attitudes, origins and life experiences that act as “filters” on our experiences of people, events and information. Seeing things through the lens of our own unique life experiences or “conditioning” may lead to assumptions, stereotyping and misunderstandings of others whose experiences differ from our own. Discuss how these perceptual barriers prevent individuals from effective communication.<\/p>\n
Provide two examples, one personal, one professional where perception affected a communication episode AND answer the following questions for each episode. <\/p>\n
