Remember that your primary rhetorical tools are logic (logos), emotion (pathos), and authority (ethos). Remember as well that you want to be balanced, use concrete nouns and active verbs, and to draw conclusions between ideas as you support your argument.

For this essay you can do a compare and contrast, argumentative, or persuasive essay. The goal is to devise a hypothesis about your topic. A hypothesis is “a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.” In other words, you know a little something about your topic and that makes you think of something else that you aren’t sure about but suspect is true. Follow that line of thought and research it. Were you right? What did you discover? Why is it relevant and important to the topic?

Note that a research essay in this class does not mean a report. You absolutely need an arguable stance with the goal of advancing the argument beyond the common understanding. We don’t want to waste our time restating other people’s arguments as the end all of our essay. Make a new claim and then strive to “prove” it with your research.

Be sure to review your notes from the class. We have looked at many tools and all of them are helpful in completing your task. Important keys include:

A clear topic sentence.

Ethos, pathos, logos

Awareness of language including balance, sentence length variation, concrete verbs (Cadillac), descriptive terms (orange Cadillac), and active verbs (the orange Cadillac drove away).

Have two anchor points per sub-topic (i.e. use around two to three references from supporting material to validate your idea).

Make sure your idea is as fresh and original as possible.

Think about your audience.

Use proper punctuation.

Cite all of your sources whether directly quoted or paraphrased.

Be sure to write at least five (5) full pages and include at least five (5) sources.
