The cause is the independent variable. A dependent variable is one that changes as a result of the manipulation of the independent variable. My independent variable would be reintroducing the patient to their blood thinner in a timely manner after their surgical procedure. If this is not done, the dependent variable should change. The effect is the dependent variable. Its value changes as the independent variable changes. One of the most important aspects of scientific research is determining cause and effect. Understanding how experiments work requires understanding the independent and dependent variable definitions. Variables are crucial to comprehend because they are the fundamental units of information studied and interpreted in research studies.

Andrade, C. (2021). In my change proposal, dependent variables that would need to be collected include the prevalence of CLABSIs and bundle compliance.

In other words, independent variables are what we expect will influence dependent variables and a dependent variable is what happens because of the independent variable (National Library of Medicine, n.d.). Why?

My PICOT

Do school-age children (P) on a food allergy management plan (I), compared to no management plan (C), have fewer incidences of allergic reactions(O) to food allergen exposure during their school year(T)?

The independent variable in my PICOT is obtaining a food allergy management plan. My dependent variable would be fewer incidences of allergic reactions to food allergen exposure. An independent variable is an intervention or treatment, while the dependent variable is the response variable or outcome (Flannelly et al., 2014). When evaluating my EBP I will have to look at the intervention or independent variable I used to see if it can produce a dependent or outcome I asked for in the time allotted in the PICOT. The independent and dependent variables are related in that one produces results from the other so they are interconnected; the dependent variable is “dependent” on the independent variable or a cause and effect. The result of my EBP will be understood if my dependent variable produces results from other variables.

References

Flannelly, L. T., Flannelly, K. J., & Jankowski, K. R.
