In this individual project, you will use a dataset that was collected on 101 students. The students were asked to play a whacamole game, hitting the moles as quickly as possible after they appeared. Each of the moles that appeared (one at a time) had one of five emotional expressions; happy, sad, angry, fearful and neutral. Thus, there are five data points for each student representing the 95% trimmed mean response time for each of the five emotions. You should export the the data in the attached Excel data file into R and restructure it into a data frame of 101 rows (one per participant) and five columns (each representing one of the five emotions). Your task will then be to carry out the clustering tasks as detailed below. <\/p>\n<p> (40 points) Use the hierarchical clustering algorithm with Ward, Single Linkage, Average Linkage and Complete Linkage methods to cluster the 101 participants in the attached dataset. Compare the four methods listed in the preceding sentence in terms of both algorithm and results. Please find the \u201coptimal\u201d number of clusters. Also, please identify people who do not fit well within the clusters they have been assigned to. Hints: you can implement a function that outputs clustering memberships at any stage of merging (i.e., by cutting the dendrogram at a particular threshold). <\/p>\n<p> (20 points) Use the k-means clustering algorithm to cluster the 101 participants in the attached dataset. Set the number of clusters (k) to partition your data based on your findings in the preceding hierarchical cluster analyses. Also, please identify people who do not fit well within the clusters they have been assigned to. <\/p>\n<p> (20 points) Discuss the implications of your results. Is there evidence that there are different types of people in terms of how speed of processing is affected by different types of emotional stimuli?
