Minority groups such as people of color and women, were beginning to obtain the same rights as their male and Caucasian counterparts. However, the article reveals the issues African American women endured during what was supposed to be a time of progression. Harris reveals the issues with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in regards to treatment toward minority groups, in this case, African American women. Charles Dancy was a Caucasian male, hired by NYPD to be an informant within Urban areas, such as New York City. However, Charles Dancy exploited his white privilege, falsely accused African American women of various crimes, resulting in false arrests. In addition to falsely accusing African American women, Charles Dancy sexually assaulted the women, further traumatizing women of color, residing in New York City. During this time, it was easy to convince people that people of color, more specifically, women of color, were conducting illegal acts. “Black women were perceived as masculine, lawless, and dangerous and as a threat to the metropolis’ collective morality.” My trial is about a white man, sodomizing his daughter, a minor. Although the individuals in the trial were Caucasian, I believe this article will help me understand the treatment of women as a whole, during this time period. Although skin color and race were an influential factor in how an individuals were treated, women were always the minority gender and continue to be to this day. Therefore, I will use the general treatment of women to understand to the extent of their mistreatment which could have been present during my trial.

Source 2:

Burnham, John C. “The Progressive Era Revolution in American Attitudes toward Sex.” The Journal of American History 59, no. 4 (1973): 885. https://doi.org/10.2307/1918367.

This article speaks about the general attitude of sex during the progressive era. As we know, women are held to a different standard than men in regards to sexual behavior, interest, and expressiveness. Throughout history, men are praised and encouraged to have multiple women whether they are there as a wife, a sexual partner, or just there for support. Unfortunately, as seen throughout history and even today, if women engage in the same sexual orientated behavior, we are labeled as promiscuous, unholy, dirty, or even inferior. This article solidifies what we already know about how women were expected to behave in regards to sexual behavior. During the progressive era, men were not as harshly ridiculed for their sexual behavior, therefore; if they cheated on their wives, it was rare for people to pay much attention. However, women were expected to be housewives, supportive of their husband, and confined to household chores. Speaking about sex in public was frowned upon. As stated in the article, “Like the conspiracy of silence, the double standard of conduct-for women, strictest purity, and for men, considerable freedom to indulge their “inherent bestiality” before and outside of marriage-was subject to reservations and exceptions as a general social standard.” Essentially, women were expected to meet a different set of standards. The reason this is important to understanding my trial is because the victim is a young woman, whereas the offender is a white male. Additionally, given the details of the case, it is very likely that the abuse prolonged for such a long period of time because the only two people who were aware of the abuse (beside the offender) were both women. This article may provide insight into why these women did not speak up again the abuse they witnessed and endured. Additionally, it may provide insight into how society viewed this father’s (offender) action given he is a male and “superior” to the victim and the witness.

Annotated Bibliography Source 1: Harris, LaShawn Denise. “Women and Girls in Jeopardy by His False Testimony”: Charles Dancy, Urban Policing, and Black Women in New York City during the 1920s.” Journal of Urban History 44, no. 3 (2016): 457–75. https://doi.org/10.1177/0096144216672447.
