The annexation was brought about through many different things, and some that not many people realize could have changed the world as we know it. William Nester wrote the article “The Annexation”, which explains many of the fears of why the United States needed to annex Texas. At St. John’s University in New York City, Nester teaches in the department of government and politics. He has also written over many pieces of history that discusses the nature of power, international relations, and more which he uses in this article to bring his point across. The second article I have reviewed is “The Annexation of Texas”, written by historian Eugene C. Barker. Barker is a famous American and Texas historian who got his degree and was also a professor at the University of Texas. Additionally, Barker served as the Texas State Historical Association’s executive director and was part of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly. The third article I have reviewed is “Constitutional Rules, Political Accidents, and the Course of History: New Light on the Annexation of Texas” written by economist Jennifer Roback Morse. As her background shows, her article goes into depth on how the rules, laws, and acts affected and impacted the annexation of Texas. These three articles that all focus on the Annexation of Texas, are similar in the fact that they are talking about the same topic, but bring views of this important topic in a variety of ways.

William Nester notes in his article that “The annexation of Texas topped the to-do list of American expansionists for one practical reason—if the United States did not take Texas, Britain or another European power would.” This statement by Nester shows us that his approach to the Texas Annexation is about how the United States needs to grab Texas while they can before more problems occur that are larger in some eyes, than slavery. Nester points out that Texas is up for grabs, not just for the US, but for European powers and for Mexico. If the United States did not jump on Texas, then another country would and the United State’s hopes for expansion would be destroyed. In this article, it notes that not only would this deny the US of expanding, but would bring fear having yet another power hungry country fighting for their land and power. Nester uses primary and secondary sources within this article such as letters from US officials such as Andrew Jackson, and different pieces that allow him to expand on this topic.

In “The Annexation of Texas” by Eugene C. Barker, points out the significance the world had on the Annexation of Texas just like William Nester had in his article. Barker states that the US, Mexico, Britain, and France were all in on the action. This caused the United States to ultimately make the decision on annexing Texas and allowing for further expansion. Barker also states the problems the US had with annexing Texas. These problems ranged in many different ways, but ultimately explains how and why the United States decided to follow through with this act. Within this article, Barker uses both primary and secondary sources to inform the reader on voting, rules within constitutions, and reasons the United States decided to annex Texas, and uses speeches given by political figures to give their thought process.

Jennifer Roback Morse in her article notes “Even if we grant the premise of Manifest Destiny-that the territory of Texas was destined to become part of the United States-we still need to consider when, how, by whom, and under what terms this absorption was accomplished.” This statement Morse made, explains to us what her purpose was in writing this piece. In her article, she makes many points about what happened after the United States decided to annex Texas. She notes that the Compromise of 1850 was an extremely important part in this annexation and caused many other events to take place. Along with this, the article explains how this process could have been much smoother without certain rules and procedures that was put into place during this time. Morse uses several primary and secondary sources such as policies, maps, newspapers, and more to bring her point across.

Within these three articles, there are many things that compare and contrast. The way that all three of these authors created their article show us how they think about this event based on how they presented it. For example, both Nester and Barker explained what happened and why it happened, whereas Morse explained more about the issues with how everything had occurred. These articles are all great pieces of work and allows the reader to get information in many different ways and in many different perspectives.

Skylar Stilwell Texas Annexation Article Comparison NESTER, WILLIAM. “The Annexation.” In The Age of Jackson and the Art of American Power, 1815-1848, 210–24.
