Several companies downscaled their operations, thereby leaving many workers jobless. Restaurants in the UAE are traditionally known for welcoming people with kindness and offering them services and products such as accommodation, family entertainment, and food (Kooli & Lock Son, 2021). Visitors and tourists from foreign countries were the main clients for the restaurants in the nation known for being a global tourist hub. Restaurants that offered lodging and theme park services were highly affected when social distancing and air travel were suspended. The restaurant industry in the nation and globally was hit the hardest as businesses prevented customers from physically visiting the outlets for fear of infecting more workers. Managers of such business enterprises had to devise strategic ways of keeping their operations while the world economy was spiraling into depression (Kooli & Lock Son, 2021). The managers became more dependent on technology to facilitate communication with clients and efficiently distribute food products to clients. Furthermore, some restaurants began using robots to serve clients who visited the facilities to avoid more infected workers.

Technological advancement was instrumental in the strategic marketing of food products to the extent that delivery became easier. A majority of restaurant managers focused on door-to-door delivery of food products based on online orders of clients. Moreover, the management communicated with their employees through social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and many others. Physical meetings between employees and the administration became rare as Zoom and Google teleconferencing became common for finding solutions to all managerial problems that the restaurants consistently faced during the pandemic outbreak.

Companies embraced technological advancement to streamline online payments, leading to a considerable reduction in contact between customers and employees. Online advertisement of digital payment systems such as Mastercard, PayPal, and other internal mechanisms helped revamp customer service in several aspects in the era of social distancing. Managers had no better option for ensuring business flow than to reassure clients that contactless service would be the new mode of operation that would save their lives during the pandemic. Embracing technology to streamline online payment systems helped the management of various restaurants across the UAE to stay in business.

Examine what needs to be changed by the restaurants in the UAE, given the emergence of Covid-19 and technological advancement:

Restaurants in the UAE must bring on board the changes necessary to keep businesses competitive. The pandemic outbreak has led to the extension of cash flow forecasts for many industry players. The extension of the cash flow forecast emanates from a decline in customers as many are concerned about their health as the fear of infection or re-infection supersedes their desire to enjoy outdoor activities (Kooli & Lock Son, 2021). The restaurants can embrace technological advancement by removing and changing touchpoints, redesigning eating spaces, and adding app-based check-ins and controls.

Hotels and restaurants need to change the touchpoints to avoid spreading infections of Coronavirus’s trait. The implementation of touch-free check-ins for employees and customers provides an avenue for preventing contagious diseases. Proper use of technology is a managerial change required for deploying touchless devices that identify clients using designed identity cards containing biometric information. The future of the restaurant industry relies on the proper utilization of technology to increase service delivery.

Restaurants in the UAE need management teams that can effectively redesign eating spaces. Customers need assurance that their eating spaces will not be sources of infection that would endanger their lives. Utilization of technology to ensure customers do not stay in crowded lines waiting to be served is an issue that requires the close attention of all restaurant managers. Redesigning eating spaces offers restaurant management and investors an opportunity to accrue more profits as the probability of more clients visiting such facilities is high.

The technology used in restaurants includes a mobile application which allows customers to effectively manage all hotel activities in the comfort of their homes or rooms. Mobile applications may consist of the use of dispenser machines which do not need human intervention to keep customers safe (Kooli & Lock Son, 2021). The restaurant industry’s future depends on good management teams that embrace mobile application-based technology and other aspects of technological advancements that limit human interactions.

Examine the approaches to change management:

COVID-19 presented restaurant management teams with an unprecedented level of management crisis. Lockdowns, social distancing, and wearing of mask measures and restrictions made the flow of customers into restaurants drop drastically. Managers require better management strategies to manage change. Approaches to change management became necessary for implementing alterations in the service delivery of employees. Most employees had to start working from home, while those dealing with actual cooking and restaurant cleanliness and handling of few clients who visited had to work in shifts. Formulating and implementing changes require approaches that include persuasion, law and policy, and debating.

Initiating any change within a restaurant or contemporary organization is difficult, as persuasion is necessary. Workers who face the possibility of losing their employment opportunity need a management approach that persuades them to be flexible during times of crisis. Implementing a change plan that allows employees to be more proactive in all aspects of their duties is essential since it provides an opportunity for better management that can be relied on for posterity purposes (Kooli & Lock Son, 2021). The management of restaurants must utilize the art of persuasion to convince the employees and other stakeholders that the new changes are in their best interest.

Implementing new policies and laws helps the employees follow a structured program by management. New policy frameworks and laws are organizational change management systems that make companies align their employees to new operations systems. The future of restaurants requires a bold management approach that brings new changes through new laws that all employees must follow for business continuity. Employees unwilling to align with the new management regulations are given the option of exiting without causing problems to those who accept such new rules. Management teams that successfully set up new laws are always bound to make impactful changes during times of crisis of the caliber of COVID-19.

Examine the role of culture and organizational design in managing change:

Organizational culture is generally the glue that keeps all critical elements of an organization together. Restaurants have key organizational cultures that include values, symbols, norms, and belief systems that hold all key stakeholders together to achieve a common goal. Organizational culture plays a critical role in determining the success of an organization. The formation of an organization’s identities is dependent upon a systematic approach to the inculcation of a culture that all employees align with for growth and development purposes. The United Arab Emirates, for instance, is a religious state where Islamic cultural practices permeate the organizational structure of a majority of organizations.

Competitive organization culture in restaurants always takes into account the prevailing market environment that may have an impact on the overall management outcome. Restaurants that face stiff competition from other firms that have embraced competition must alter their business ways. Furthermore, the motivation of employees to understand their roles and serve clients appropriately is necessary for ensuring a critical support system is achieved for posterity purposes. The workers who do not align with the new organizational culture that allows healthy competition may be forced to move to other firms. Competitive organizational culture enhances the performance of restaurants in a dynamic restaurant business environment.

Entrepreneurial organizational culture anchored on a common belief system cascaded to the junior employees. Employees who face the risks of unemployment during a COVID-19 outbreak that affected all businesses in UAE must understand that the management always looks out for their best interests. Entrepreneurial culture is significant in keeping restaurant management aware of the most impactful management strategies that can be relied on for posterity. An organization that teaches entrepreneurial culture to its stakeholders is capable of implementing austerity measures that lead to better management of restaurants (Kreiser, 2020). The restaurants in the UAE managed the COVID-19 crisis because they had a proper belief system that allowed them to be more proactive in making critical changes to their organizational structure on time. For instance, most firms with entrepreneurial cultures welcomed and implemented lockdown measures to protect their interests.

Implementing change in an organization has limits in certain instances, as stakeholders occasionally oppose new modes of operations. Changes in restaurant management during the COVID-19 pandemic were unavoidable for all managers. Managers are responsible for protecting customers and the workforce during crises, shifting the restaurants’ overall operations to online and mobile applications to avoid interactions between clients and employees (Kreiser, 2020). The lives of employees of the company are precious and promote business continuity which is essential for the overall competitiveness of the entire institution (Zhang, Park, Bonn, & Cho, 2021). All aspects of employment and management of change must be done professionally for all stakeholders to get what is rightfully theirs within the framework of the contracts they sign.

Employees who understand the importance of `healthcare during a pandemic outbreak would benefit from all the policies and legal measures the management formulates and implement. Restaurants faced unprecedented challenges that required flexible work ethics and culture, allowing empowered workers to perform their duties from home (Nuseir, Aljumah, & Alshurideh, 2021). Furthermore, the pandemic gave new horizons for all companies to fundamental changes in their mode of operations to attain better service delivery standards to the few clients who could visit their facilities.

Make some relevant recommendations for the restaurant owners based on your evaluations:

Restaurant managers in the UAE must embrace technological advancement in all aspects of their operations. It is recommended that the use of online marketing to further the marketing process is necessary to bolster the existing level of competition that reduces the level of human interactions (Kreiser, 2020). Moreover, the increase in vaccination success has made the world at peace with itself again, but the lessons learned should be applied to all levels of restaurant management (Nuseir et al., 2021). The restaurant industry was the most affected by the COVID-19 outbreak due to the restrictions preventing customers from reaching their destinations at the right time.

Restaurant managers must frequently train their stakeholders on how to embrace technology and other aspects of change. Change is bound to occur within the confines of business operations as the competitors grapple with pandemic responses. Change in the strategy of operations of companies becomes inevitable when firms face crises in a contemporary business environment (Nuseir et al., 2021). A management team that is flexible to change in a more volatile business environment is more prepared to accept the change needed for successful management, especially the introduction of new changes in the business sector (Kreiser, 2020). Stakeholders including the customers, the investors, and employees need to be continuously prepared for better service delivery in the long run. The provision of a proper management framework that incorporates proper service delivery to all customers is required in the restaurant industry.

The business model’s restaurant businesses embrace need to be anchored on technology and implementation of change strategies. Management change to organization structure and model of doing business is a major issue that directly impacts the profitability of restaurants during times of crisis of the status of COVID-19. Alteration of the way customer service teams communicate with clients as a majority of payment services migrate to digital platforms is required. It is, therefore, recommended that a dedicated team be assigned to take care of all the technological needs that specific restaurant firms require to stay in business in a competitive environment (Kreiser, 2020). Furthermore, the employment of a new but lean team of employees who are flexible to change would be more appropriate in the technological department to serve the interests of all stakeholders by ensuring a seamless communication system prevails over time. Technological innovation and implementation of change strategies make restaurant businesses to be more proactive to change and work in a different way that increases investor confidence.

Coronavirus infections that became more prominent in early 2022 and increased up to late early 2022 immensely influenced the operations of restaurant businesses in the UAE Restaurant businesses in the region need to embrace change and especially improve on technological innovation to serve more clients in the best way possible. Furthermore, creating spaces and managing them when there is a crisis would make the companies stand out in a crowded field where each of the industry players is jostling for space. The healthy competition allows the major restaurant industry players in the UAE to be more proactive in making bold moves to attain higher levels of profitability in a business environment that is unforgiving to firms that do not implement crucial changes at the most appropriate time during times of crisis. Implementation of technological advancement and employee management techniques would make the restaurant to be more competitive for posterity purposes.

References

Kooli, C., & Lock Son, M.
