If an aneurysm ruptures, it can cause life-threatening internal bleeding. Abdominal aortic aneurysms usually do not cause symptoms until they grow large or rupture (Keisler & Carter, 2015). When they cause symptoms, the most common is sudden, severe pain in the abdomen, back, or legs. Although abdominal aortic aneurysms can occur in anyone, they are most common in men over age 60 who have smoked at some point in their lives (Kent, 2014). Other risk factors include high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, and a family history of the condition.

Risk Factors

There are many risk factors for developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). These include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and a family history of AAA. Smoking is the most important risk factor for AAA and is thought to account for approximately 50% of all cases. Smoking damages the walls of the arteries, making them more likely to weaken and form an aneurysm (Keisler & Carter, 2015). High blood pressure is also a major risk factor for AAA. This is because high blood pressure puts extra stress on the arteries, causing them to weaken over time.

High cholesterol is another risk factor for AAA. This is because cholesterol can build up in the arteries, making them narrower and more likely to rupture (Kent, 2014). Diabetes is also a risk factor for AAA. This is because diabetes can damage the blood vessels, making them more likely to weaken and form an aneurysm. Finally, a family history of AAA is also a risk factor for developing the condition (Farber & Parodi, 2022). This is because AAA tends to run in families, so if someone has a family member with AAA, they are more likely to develop it themselves.

Impacts

The impact of AAA on the community is significant. AAA is a leading cause of death in the United States, and the risk of AAA increases with age. This means that as the population of the United States ages, the number of AAA-related deaths is likely to increase. In addition, AAA is a costly condition to treat (Keisler & Carter, 2015). The hospitalization and surgical costs associated with AAA can be significant, and the community often bears these costs through taxation or insurance premiums.

AAA also significantly impacts the quality of life of those affected by the condition. People with AAA often experience pain and disability and may be unable to work or participate in activities they enjoy (Kent, 2014). This can lead to social isolation and a decline in mental health. The best way to reduce the impact of AAA on the community is to prevent the condition from developing in the first place. This can be done by educating the community about the risk factors for AAA and how to reduce them (Farber & Parodi, 2022). It is also important to promote early detection of AAA through screenings so that people can receive treatment before the condition becomes life-threatening.

Community Need

The abdominal aortic aneurysm is a need in the community because it is a potentially life-threatening condition that can cause serious health complications. Abdominal aortic aneurysms often go undetected until they rupture, at which point they can cause internal bleeding and death (Keisler & Carter, 2015). Although surgery is the only way to treat a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, early detection and treatment of an unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm can prevent it from rupturing and can save lives.

There are several reasons why an abdominal aortic aneurysm is a need in the community. First, the condition is relatively common, affecting an estimated 2-4% of the population. Second, it is often asymptomatic, meaning that many people with the condition are unaware of it until it ruptures (Farber & Parodi, 2022). Third, abdominal aortic aneurysms can be fatal if they rupture; even if they do not rupture, they can cause serious health complications. Finally, surgery is the only effective treatment for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, and early detection and treatment of an unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm can prevent it from rupturing.

Program

There are several ways in which the abdominal aortic aneurysm could be addressed in the community (Kent, 2014). One way would be to increase awareness of the condition through education and public outreach. This could be done through community events, informational materials, and social media. Another way to address the issue would be to provide screenings for the condition (Keisler & Carter, 2015). This could be done at community health fairs, local clinics, or doctor’s offices. Finally, those diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm should be connected with support groups and resources to help them manage the condition.

Stakeholder Involvement

There are many ways that stakeholders can be involved in addressing the issue of AAA. First and foremost, it is important to raise awareness of the condition. People need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of AAA to seek medical help if they are at risk. Healthcare providers also have a role in addressing AAA (Keisler & Carter, 2015). They can screen patients for AAA and refer them to specialists for treatment if necessary. They can also educate patients and their families about the condition and how to prevent it.

Conclusion

An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a serious medical condition that can lead to life-threatening complications. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to improve the chances of a successful outcome. While the cause of the condition is not always known, certain risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. With proper medical care, the majority of people with an abdominal aortic aneurysm can go on to lead long and healthy lives.

References

Farber, M. A., & Parodi, F. E.
