This book was written by the author Norman E. Tutorow. Tutorow is extremely knowledgeable and educated for his line of work. He attended Stanford University where he received his Ph.D. in American political and military history as well as getting four bachelors degrees in history, philosophy, Spanish, and German. When Tutorow finished his education at Stanford, he became a member in many historical societies as well as a member of the World Association of International Studies. Tutorow is known for several of his books based on history including this book that I am reviewing.

Throughout this book, Tutorow has collected both primary and secondary sources to help paint a better picture and a further understanding of why he wrote this book as well as the meaning he wanted to bring to the readers attention. As stated in the book, “There was widespread hope or fear in the United States depending on one’s perspective) that recognition of Texas would be a mere prelude to annexation.” The purpose of this piece is to show that the American people had a variety of thoughts on the annexation of Texas and didn’t know whether it would be a good or bad thing for them. This piece also goes into depth on why America had such an urge to fight for Texas, because other countries had talks of claiming Texas for themselves.

Tutorow used a wide range of primary and secondary sources in this book, and it is clear that he conducted extensive research to bring the work to its current state. The primary sources Tutorow chose examined different laws, documents, letters, speeches and statements from different point of views on the annexation of Texas. One primary sources he used was a petition from the House of Representatives, presented from Ohio, tha contained over 1,000 signatures that were against ;annexation and antislavery. The reason this was such a big deal is because the people of the north knew that annexing Texas into the United States would mean that the south would gain yet another slave state as they are trying to abolish slavery entirely. The secondary sources that Tutorow used within this book I thought were also very valuable to its message. In my opinion, the secondary source about the thoughts from different areas such as Texas, the US north and south, as well as different countries were extremely important. Hearing the thoughts on what these people thought from where they were from gave the reader a greater understanding of why they thought the way they did on whether they wanted Texas or not. Overall, I believe Tutorow did an incredible job in pulling both primary and secondary sources to create this book. Tutorow absolutely did a lot of research to create the message that he wanted to bring the the reader and to make a well written book.

Book Cite:

Tutorow, Norman E.
