According to the two authors, for the longest time, police have exhibited violence towards people of color, especially blacks, which has led to racial bias in the entire criminal justice system. The police departments are historically oppressive and violent, and funding them only enables them to continue violating the taxpayers.

In the article, the authors talk about how defunding the police means different things to different people. To some people, defunding the police is associated with development, as the funds used to fund the police will go to other sectors such as housing, social workers, mental health experts, and other community resources. Some people have attributed the defunding of the police campaign to an end to oppressive and violent acts associated with the police, especially to minorities. However, to some people, police misconduct is exaggerated, and defunding the police unit will lead to increased crime rates and reduced security in the country.

Defunding the police has become a national debate, with Lum, Koper, and Wu analyzing whether we need to defund the police. In their analysis, the authors cite the case of George Floyd’s murder by the police and try to understand why people are calling for defunding the police. The authors highlight the role of the police and the numerous tasks they carry in ensuring the safety of the taxpayers, justifying why the defunding campaign is wrong.

Running head: DEFUNDING THE POLICE 1 3 DEFUNDING THE POLICE Defunding The Police Joanne Jean Baptiste Chamberlain University Critical thinking Professor Waltz 10/13/2022 Cobbina-Dungy, J.
