Paper III, the Opinion Essay<\/p>\n
Assignment: Write a 3 to 4 \u00bd -page (900 \u2013 1350 word) argument on a \u201chot button\u201d topic (see link to list below). Your essay should follow, in every particular, the formal guidelines that are in the \u201cFormatting Your Papers\u201d file on Blackboard. Paper III is worth 25 points.<\/p>\n
CONTENT: <\/p>\n
1. Begin with an introduction that provides context and includes an argumentative thesis. <\/p>\n
2. Include all five features (introduction, narrative, confirmation, refutation and concession, and summation) of the Classical Argument model (see handout). <\/p>\n
3. Use source material in support of the lines of argument you present in your confirmation. <\/p>\n
4. Include a variety of quotations, paraphrases, and summaries from your sources (at least one quotation must be in block form) in support of topic sentences that begin body paragraphs.<\/p>\n
5. Treat your opposition\u2019s best arguments in a separate section (refutation and concession) or as part of your lines of argument (confirmation). <\/p>\n
6. Write a conclusion that gives your reader a sense of closure (or finality). <\/p>\n
7. Proofread your text for errors in punctuation, grammar, spelling, and mechanics. <\/p>\n
FORMAL CONCERNS: <\/p>\n
\u2022 Your paper must be 3 to 4 1\/2 pages in length (approximately 900-1350 words), exclusive of your Works Cited; your paper must be supported by a minimum of two sources (these may come from our classwork, AUD Library databases, and\/or Google (as approved by me). <\/p>\n
\u2022 It must be typed, double-spaced, and conform, in every particular, to the guidelines established in my handout entitled Formatting Your Essays (available on Blackboard) <\/p>\n
\u2022 The first page of your paper should start with a header (last name plus page number), heading (top left), and title. Please do not append a title sheet to your text. <\/p>\n
\u2022 Your title should be centered (capitalize all substantive words) in plain text below the heading on page one. <\/p>\n
\u2022 In addition to the text of your paper, you will provide a Works Cited in MLA Documentation style with links (URLs) to your sources. <\/p>\n
\u2022 You are advised to clear external sources (those that result from a Google search) with me. <\/p>\n
\u2022 Reminder: Sources are not limited to e-books and articles from journals and magazines but may include DVDs, video and film, questionnaires (surveys), lectures, pictures and graphs, interviews, etc. <\/p>\n
\u2022 Frame all references to sources in your text (typically, in a signal phrase and parenthetical note) and cross reference them with the alphabetical (by author\u2019s last name) list of sources in your Works Cited. We will discuss \u201cframing\u201d in class.<\/p>\n
\u25baThe final draft of the Argumentative Research Paper is due on Turnitin.com on Monday, Dec. 5 (Section K) or Tuesday, Dec. 6 (Sections A&J). <\/p>\n
