Zoom had its advantages, but I didn\u2019t like being physically separated from you. Being together means that I can modulate my lectures when you get bored or overwhelmed. I can feel the energy when your mind is blown, or when you think for yourself. Am I making too much of being physically present in a shared space in real time? Am I being nostalgic for a certain kind of human subjectivity? For a certain kind of time and space. For a certain University?<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Compared to last year (due to the Pandemic), this year all of you are in Toronto, no longer studying from China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan\u2026those places that are associated with East Asia. In what way does this reality&#8211;studying together and from Canada&#8211;shape not only how we study East Asia, but East Asia itself? Using at least one of your fellow students\u2019 video projects, at least one of the visual materials assigned for week 11, and at least one of the readings that we have studied since week 9, write an essay that speculates about the future of East Asian Studies.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Write a critical reflection on what you have learned in our class and how it has changed or challenged the ways you think of \u201cEast Asian Studies\u201d as a subject. In addition, mobilize this reflection to speculate about a new kind of East Asian Studies that you would like to see emerge in the future. In your essay use at least one of your fellow students\u2019 video projects, at least one of the visual materials assigned for week 11, and at least one of the readings that we have studied since week 9.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Cao Fei\u2019s, Yang Ah Ham\u2019s, and the Chim Pom&#8217;s work intersect with our class\u2019 three problematics (History-Time, Geography-Space, Subjectivity-Language) in different ways. After first establishing this intersection by, at least, one of these artists, use their work to speculate about the future of East Asian Studies.
