Your topic should have the capacity to sustain a rigorous argument in a much greater length than you have been asked previously in this course. This latitude – and freedom – has a dual quality: while it allows a wide spectrum of topics, at the same time, misleading if you do not define meticulously your research boundaries.

Description:

You will write an 8-page critical paper (approx. 2,000 words) dealing with a theoretical topic, individual building, monument, landscape, hypothetical project, or image of your own choosing. The paper (illustrated as necessary) will include a thorough assessment of the topic selected, an analysis of its content, and a discussion of its meaning and potential meanings.

As part of the process, you will be required to submit an abstract proposal for approval by your faculty and a preliminary outline and bibliography.

Requirements:

Your Final Paper is due on Monday, December 12, 2022 (due by 11:59 pm), in lieu of a Final Exam. Please upload your finished paper as a Word document in the course Bb site under the assignment link. Click on the tab and proceed from there. The standards for the essay are: 8 pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point font Calibri Light, Times New Roman, or Garamond. Write your name, course number and professor’s name in the upper right margin.

You must use footnotes or endnotes if you paraphrase or quote directly. Even if you have not paraphrased or taken direct quotes, you must include a brief bibliography at the end of your paper, listing – in the appropriate format – those works you have consulted in your research. Images with appropriate captions are also necessary, as your reader may not be familiar with the material under discussion.

While Google has a place in academia, it is a fairly circumscribed one: Useful as a finding tool, “Googling” (understood in the broadest possible sense) should not be used in place of scholarly texts and journals (which may be in digital format, when they are simply digitized versions of printed texts, such as those found on JSTOR).

We take plagiarism very seriously and will not insult your integrity by saying anything more than it is a violation of University policy, and a guaranteed “F” for the assignment in question.

Introduction: The purpose of this assignment is to help you to expand your critical knowledge of the field of architectural history/theory by writing a more comprehensive paper on a topic of your choosing.
