However, the stop needs to be non-intrusive. According to the fourth amendment, police officers need to have reasonable suspicion that there has been or there is going to be crime committed in a specific area (Kumar and Venkatachalam, 2022). There are cases where police officers reasonably tell about an individual being in possession of weapons. In such a case, the police need to consider frisking the suspect by having a quick touch and skin on the suspect’s outer clothing. The common term used to refer to the statute is Terry stop, and it has major applications in the country. It is common to meet a police officer along the streets, and he orders a stop and frisk to ensure the safety of the public.

Stop and frisk has helped get weapons away from the street since suspects get scared of being stopped by the police. Furthermore, the policy targets high-crime areas and does not present any discrimination from racial and ethnic backgrounds. Some of the results that have been realized since its implementation include reduced homicide and crime cases. The major disadvantage associated with the policy is that it can easily get abused when police officers decide to hunt down individuals without having reasonable suspicion of the occurrence of a crime (Fields, 2018). The policy goes against people’s privacy since any stop may lead to the detention of an individual so that more searches can be performed to ascertain whether he has weapons. Finally, it creates fear in society since any person can become a police target. The policy needs to be understood on the basis of police officers having reasonable suspicion of the occurrence of crime. If the suspicion is not reasonable, officers should avoid stopping and frisking people. An observation of the stated aspects will increase the effectiveness of the policy regarding the handling of crime.

References

Fields, S. E. (2018).
