Note that your survey is to be “blind.” Understand what this means from the text.

(2) Core Survey Questions

Use the guide below in conjunction with the example new product development survey in the text (chapter 5, section 8) to develop your specific survey questions.

Your survey should be mostly closed-ended, but should include at least one well-crafted open-ended question.

Use appropriate response options as illustrated in the text.

When gathering ratings on items/features/competitors, use the same Likert scale for meaningful comparisons.

Survey mistakes should not be present (i.e., complex questions, leading and loaded questions, ambiguous questions, double barreled items, order bias, overlapping response options, etc.).

The core of your survey needs to include each of the following New Product Development Survey Components as illustrated by the best practices in the text (see courseware chapter 5, section 8 for full survey example).

Brand Read/Comparison

Likert scale required. No pick lists, ranking, etc. Include brands that would compete with the new product idea, not brands the company currently competes with. Include your client on the list. They need a comparison read.

Feature Ratings

Likert scale required. No pick lists, ranking, etc. Make sure your list is as exhaustive as possible, includes ideas from secondary research, and contains some out-of-the box ideas as potential differentiators to test.

Additional/Missing Features

Open-ended question required. Since the list of features developed by the client and research team cannot be exhaustive, respondents should be asked about other features they deem important for a new product to include.

Purchase Intent of Holistic concepts

Likert scale required. Minimum of 3 holistic concepts should be tested (see example in text). Important: concepts should not introduce new features not included in your feature ratings. Use purchase intent best practice question wording from text.

Pricing Read on Holistic Concepts

Use categorical price ranges. Use best practice pricing read language from text. Use the same 3 holistic concepts as in D.

(3) Demographic Questions

Finally, you will want to ask 3 demographic questions that would be relevant for market segmentation. Be sure to include mutually-exclusive response categories. Do not leave open-ended.

Review Survey

When your draft is finished, a good tip is asking yourself “When I get the result to this question back, how will this information help me answer the client’s research question?” If the question does not help address the original research objective, it likely needs revision.

Your survey should include the following: (1) Introduction Develop a short (2-3 sentences) introduction that states the purpose of the survey, reason for participating, how responses will be used, and the survey due date.
