Term Paper Presentation Guidelines This presentation will be assigned during the last two or three weeks of class. The research paper itself will be due at the end of finals week of the semester. (NOTE: Students who do not hand in the research paper on time may receive a grade of F or INCOMPLETE for this course). Presenters are asked to speak for a minimum of 8 to 10 minutes. This presentation is required. Here is a suggested\/recommended outline for the presentation. In other words, your presentation (made orally using a PowerPoint) should cover the four areas listed below AND HERE IS WHAT YOUR POWERPOINTS SHOULD CONVEY during the presentation.<\/p>\n
Explain your topic and why you chose it. Remember the term paper topic must be approved inwriting by the instructor beforehand. The term paper topic should be presented in the form of a question. In other words, in this presentation students are asked to explain the question being researched to the class.<\/p>\n
2. Discuss your data sources and how you will obtain the data to write your paper. These are the data sources and evidence you will be looking at to answer your term paper question. Sources can be in academic or government books or articles\/websites, not normally popular journals, or magazines. Students will need at least ten independent secondary sources for this paper. I urge that the sources be found in academic journals or academic books written by experts, or use data compiled by state or federal agencies. Those using primary sources will be given extra credit, for example designing and administering your own survey and using the data you collect. There are many links in the syllabus for research and I urge you to utilize those resources. You can also use the assigned text which has many citations and references. The library at NJCU is an invaluable resource<\/p>\n
3. Discuss your analysis, what you are finding so far. If you cannot discuss your analysis, then I suggest you discuss what you think you may find and why<\/p>\n
Discuss the relevance of the term paper topic to the subject matter in this course and how what you are researching is related to the coursework and lectures. Demonstrate that you have read the textbook! The actual format for the term paper is discussed in the syllabus so please make sure you check formatting and organizational requirements. Come prepared to speak. Remember students are required to present for 8 to 10 minutes, this will be an important time to keep in mind. You will be graded on the clarity of your discussion, your approach to the research, data sources, and how well you relate what you are researching to the course. One more crucial point. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THIS ASSIGNMENT FOR THE LAST TWO- OR THREE-WEEKS OFTHE SEMESTER. BEGIN WORKING ON THIS ASSIGNMENT AFTER MID NOVEMBER.LEAVING THE ASSIGNMENT FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER DOES NOT, IN MY EXPERIENCE, LEAVE ENOUGH TIME TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT.
