Abbott&#8217;s banning of the use of &#8220;critical<br \/> race theory&#8221; in the curriculum of public school, colleges, and<br \/> universities is highly controversial.\u00a0 \u00a0Given that much of the Texas past has seen the<br \/> blight of racism in many forms in our government, education, housing, and other<br \/> aspects of life in Texas from before its founding as a state.\u00a0 It&#8217;s ironic<br \/> that the President and Congress have made &#8220;Juneteenth&#8221; a national<br \/> holiday given that Juneteenth marks the day that, some two years after the end<br \/> of the Civil War and the emancipation of slaves in the southern states,<br \/> African-Americans still were treated in much of Texas as slaves.\u00a0 They\u2019d not been freed from their enslavement<br \/> by the government in Texas. Two years after the end of the Civil War, informed<br \/> the black citizens of Texas that they were free and actually had been for two<br \/> years but not given the rights until the U.S. Army came to Texas, learned that<br \/> the former slaves had not been informed of their emancipation, and forced Texas<br \/> officials to treat the former slaves as full citizens of the United States and<br \/> the State of Texas.\u00a0 And many Whites in Texas continued to deny the full<br \/> fruits of freedom to \u00a0African-Americans<br \/> in many, ways, by law and by custom. That is the controversy and that is how<br \/> you should approach your research.\u00a0 There are numerous articles about this<br \/> in Texas and national newspapers and magazines.\u00a0 I\u2019ve provided you with<br \/> articles that detail the bill, the actions of the Governor, and the overall<br \/> controversy.\u00a0 Also, discuss the origins of the &#8220;critical race<br \/> theory&#8221; in the academic in the U.S. recently (and why Republicans in the<br \/> South particularly, oppose its teaching).\u00a0 Why is there such vehement<br \/> opposition? Is it racism?\u00a0 Is it to appeal to white supremacists<br \/> voters?\u00a0 Address questions such questions and others that are addressed in<br \/> these articles. <\/p>\n<p> \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p> Your paper must meet a minimum word count of 1,200 words.\u00a0 Type the word count at the bottom of your<br \/> paper.\u00a0 You will be penalized for a word<br \/> count under 1,200 words.\u00a0 Follow the<br \/> instructions on the submission site for turning in your paper.\u00a0 It is due NO LATER THAN 11:59 p.m. on July 6<br \/> (Tuesday night). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>H.B. 3979 and Gov.
