There are two parts to this week’s discussion:
Part 1:
1. Define and discuss the difference between quarantine and isolation.
Part 2:\u00a0You have an option of answering option 1 or 2.
Option 1:\u00a0
Compare and contrast quarantine\/isolation laws for\u00a0human communicable diseases\u00a0at the\u00a0international, national, and state level.\u00a0\u00a0Use resources in the lessons for international and national laws and use\u00a0this resource for state laws:\u00a0http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/health\/state-quarantine-and-isolation-statutes.aspx#1. \u00a0Find your state in the table in the website given above and read the authority, penalties, and police law and limitations (if given).\u00a0 \u00a0 Is the language too specific or too broad to be effective? Are the penalties fair? \u00a0Who has the authority to implement quarantine and under what circumstances? \u00a0Please also see your state’s laws directly and conduct further research on whether it has ever been enacted. Option 2:
Many times quarantine is enacted on a voluntary basis but there have been times in modern history where quarantine has been mandatory.\u00a0\u00a0Review a case of mandatory quarantine\/isolation and how the laws were used to enforce it.\u00a0 Examples include Andrew Speaker and MDR-TB in 2007 or Kaci Hickox and Ebola in 2014.\u00a0 You may find another case to use but it should be within\u00a0the last 10-20 years.\u00a0 We will discuss ethical concerns next work, so just look at these cases from a legal standpoint.\u00a0 Was enforcement necessary?\u00a0 Was it legal?\u00a0 Were the laws sufficient or not enough in this case?\u00a0
