It involves all major airline domestic flights departing from Oregon airports in 2016.
Project Idea: We try to use all the statistical tools discussed in this class to analyze this dataset. The purpose of any statistics class is to better understand the world through data. Although we have many tools, all of them come back to one question: “How can we better understand our data?” In order to really understand these tools, we will repeatedly ask the question, “What patterns can we find in this Oregon flight data?”
Project Procedure: For each project, you will be asked to use a different tool or approach on the same data and prepare a report. By the end of the course, you will have used every tool we have to better understand this data.
XLSTAT (upgrade your XLSTAT-Free to a paid version for FREE): Please follow Step 5 at the bottom of this page Required Software, which has been updated on 6/29/2021.

InstructionsDownload the data linked below.
Use Excel or other software tool to analyze the data.
Answer the questions listed below.
Do not include the original dataset in your report. Your answers should be in complete sentences. Insert necessary tables or graphs to support your arguments and comments in the report. Do not attach a bunch of computer printouts.
TurnItIn is turned on. Be sure to submit your own report.

DataDownload here: Oregon Flight Data download
More information about the data: Airline On-Time Performance Data. (Links to an external site.) We are working on Reporting Carrier On-Time Performance (1987-present). To decipher carrier codes, click on this PDF document: Carrier Codes download

QuestionsPlease do NOT copy these questions into your report. Just number your answers.
(1) What is this data “all about”?

(2) How many rows and columns? What does each row represent? What can you tell about the data from the column headers?

(3) Is this data quantitative, qualitative, or both? Why?

(4) Randomly pick one column. Summarize in a clear and complete English sentence, and explain what this column tells us. Comment about the average and the spread (i.e., standard deviation) of the column. Be sure to include any necessary units.
Hint: In Excel, use =average() and =stdev(). If you have difficulties with using Excel, please watch “Excel Tips” video in Module 1’s required lecture videos.

(5) What is the average delay in departures (Column AF DepDelay, not Column AG DepDelayMinutes) from Oregon Airports? Be sure to include the unit of this quantity.

We have a pretty cool data set and can see all departures by major carriers in the given time frame. What if instead we just measured a few flights? Measure 3 different “random” sets of data. For ease, pick 3 random flights and calculate the average of your 3 flights.
Check the instructor’s video tutorial on how to randomly select rows using XLSTAT: How to create a random sample using XLSTAT?
To randomly select rows using Excel: How to create a random sample using Excel?
(6) What is the average departure delay of your 3 randomly selected flights?

Your answer to (6) probably wasn’t that close to the true average (although you might have gotten lucky). Let’s consider what would happen if you do the same thing but using an average of 30 flights. Now, pick 30 random flights.
(7) What is the average departure delay of these randomly selected 30 flights?

(8) Do you see evidence of the Central Limit Theorem at play? Was the average of a larger sample closer to the truth? Do you think all of your classmates will find the same thing? Why or why not?

Submission DetailsAfter you use Excel and analyze the data, you will then create a report that responds to the 8 questions listed above (include the numbers and answer in complete sentences). Please include your numbered responses, but do not copy the questions into your document.
In your word document, you may insert any relevant charts or tables to support your argument. Then submit your responses as a file upload (DOC, DOCX, PDF) here in Canvas.

Grading CriteriaTotal 20 points: 4 points each for questions (3) and (8), and 2 points each for the remaining, for answering the questions correctly, clearly, and succinctly.
