According to the text, the “components of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills” (p. 19). I’ve worked mainly in alternative and special education, so most of the leaders would fall under the “Caring Leadership” category (p.11). The text explains that Caring Leadership involves showing respect and concern for people. “Effective leaders who fit into this group also demonstrate behavior that Psychologist Carl Rogers explained as unconditional positive regard. By this he meant caring about and respecting another person despite one’s feelings or judgments about that person’s actions. As religious leaders have said, one may hate the sin yet still love the sinner” (p.10).
I also appreciated the 11 Summit Leadership lessons from Sir Edmund Hillary. Although we read about what makes a good leader, and how to become one every term, these lessons seemed especially relevant and meaningful. “Lesson 4: When selecting a team, ensure they are multi-skilled and have a sense of humor, in times of difficulty you want to have someone who can laugh at adversity. The last thing Hillary wanted was a team member going into a panic, or worse, a person who would rather look for a scapegoat” (p.70). This is probably the most honest piece of advice I’ve ever read in a text and I’m here for it.
Rosenbach, W. E., Taylor, R.
