For example, having children or owning an iPhone are common practices in our society, so doing these things does not make you a member of a subculture.\u00a0Some common characteristics of subcultures include:\u00a0 <br \/>beliefs that set them apart from the rest of society <br \/>social norms and values that are unique or contrast with mainstream culture <br \/>interaction organized around music, art or other shared activities <br \/>a special way of communicating (slang) <br \/>material objects (clothing, equipment etc) that are specific to the group <br \/>For this homework assignment, I want you to discuss the following: <br \/>Describe a subculture that you currently or formerly belong to. Looking at the characteristics I have listed above, discuss the characteristics that you share with other members of the subculture.\u00a0 <br \/>Refer to the list of elements of culture in your textbook readings (Values, Beliefs, Norms, Symbols and Language), describe the non-material elements of your subculture.\u00a0How do these elements contrast with mainstream culture in the United States?\u00a0 <br \/>The textbook makes the case that &#8220;material and nonmaterial aspects of culture are linked, and physical objects often symbolize cultural ideas&#8221;. What are the material aspects of your subculture?\u00a0 Does this subculture use material culture in a unique way? Are the material items associated with your subculture linked with the nonmaterial elements of your subculture?
