Cultural\ncompetence involves the capacity to comprehend, communicate, and relate\neffectively with people from different cultures. As more students and educators\njoin the various study programs, it is essential to develop certain\ninterpersonal awareness and sensitivity to thrive in culturally diverse\ninstitutions. To enhance teaching and learning, the social context where\nlearning is taking place should be considered. Cultural competence enables\neducators to effectively teach students from other cultures. This paper focuses\non reflecting a personal assessment of my cultural competence and the\nstrategies to enhance it. It also discusses why it is significant as an\neducator to understand diverse learners and cultural competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Personal Assessment of\nCultural Competence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As\nan educator, I build my cultural competence by first having background\nknowledge of my students. It enables me to understand the student\u2019s behaviors\nin their cultural context. I also value diversity by accepting and respecting\nthe differences in cultural backgrounds among students and their different ways\nof communicating to ensure their inclusivity (D’Andrea,\n2005, p. 80). I respect their different traditions and\nvalues. Additionally, I am culturally self-aware. I know my experiences, skills,\nvalues, and beliefs that shape the view of who I am and why I fit in the school\nenvironment. I also understand the dynamics of difference and what can go wrong\nduring communication and how to resolve the situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Strategies to enhance\nCultural Competence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n To\nenhance my cultural competence, I have to learn more about diverse beliefs. To\naccommodate more students from other cultures, I will have to research and look\nfor cultural insights through journal articles, academic books, and memoirs.\nLearning about other languages will enable me to reach and connect more with\npeople who speak the language (D’Andrea, 2005, p.82). I will also be able to effectively connect with more students from\nother cultures and ensure I teach them according to their needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Furthermore,\nattending diversity-focused workshops and conferences will enhance my cultural\ncompetence. Formal training on diversity issues that affect students and my\ncolleagues will improve my knowledge. It will also ensure I become more\nsensitive on the diverse communities that have been marginalized in education (D’Andrea, 2005, p.85). Also,\ninteracting with students from diverse cultures will enhance my competence.\nAsking them about their culture with respect will enable me to learn more and\nensure I become better in cultural competency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Importance of\nUnderstanding Diverse Student Learners and Cultural Competence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Comprehending\ndiverse learners and cultural competence is essential in that it helps in\nimproving the education system and the student’s performance. Educators\nrecognize how the students’ performance can be enhanced by integrating the\nracial and ethnic minority contributions to the curriculum (Murphy, 2010, p.\n209). Cultural competence is viewed as an ethical responsibility for educators\nto enable the students to succeed in their studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally,\nit ensures inclusivity and equity of all the students. It gives a right to\neveryone to access education despite their culture (Murphy, 2010, p. 212). It\nalso ensures that respective practices are adapted to accommodate all the\nstudents from diverse cultures. Students can also be taught at their pace, and\nin the language they understand. Higher education is also made accessible to\nall students from different cultures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n How my Understanding Impacts Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My\nunderstanding of the cultural competency will enable me to use different\nteaching styles which all the students can understand. I will incorporate the\nknowledge I have acquired within the classroom environment (Matteliano, 2014). It will\nmotivate the students to think critically and be eager to learn unfamiliar\nskills and traits. The students will gain confidence in communicating their\nweak points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Impact of my Understanding on Colleagues<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My\ncolleagues will be motivated to appreciate diverse cultures. They will be able\nto accommodate students from different cultures and learning behaviors. I will\ninfluence them to respect diversity and be sensitive to the students (Matteliano, 2014). My\ncolleagues may also advocate for the institutionalization of cultural\ncompetency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Criticism of Assignment\nTheories and Concepts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Even\nif cultural competency is a dominant approach to address cultural diversity in\neducational institutions, it has conceptual limitations. It ignores the other\nidentities and defines culture as race and ethnicity leaving the other cultural\nidentities unresolved. It positions the educators as presumed members of the\ncentral groups making the other professionals from minority groups\nunrecognizable (Matteliano, 2014). Moreover, cultural competence is measured in terms of learner\nconfidence and outcome, which may not affect differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pros and Cons of the\nAssignment Theories and Concepts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The\nconcepts are beneficial in that they help in building an environment where all\nstudents are comfortable. It also helps in building professional close\nrelationships between the learners and the educators (Matteliano,\n2014). It eliminates prejudice between the groups. It\nalso ensures that all students are given equal chances in the learning\ninstitutions. The disadvantage is that it does not fully address prejudice in\nthe learning institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Cultural\ncompetence is effective in solving the cultural diversity in educational\ninstitutions. It recognizes the racial and ethnic contributions in the education\ncurriculum. Educators who challenge and encourage students from diverse\ncultures can improve educational institutions.
