ASSIGNMENT: Considering methods suggested throughout the course, choose one of the short stories covered in class and write an argumentative essay in response.
Your essay must discuss the importance of a significant literary element present in the selected story.
You may choose to write an essay that analyzes one of the following:
a major character’s role; <\/p>\n
a major theme or motif; <\/p>\n
the work’s portrayal of gender norms; <\/p>\n
or, how the setting relates to the narrative. <\/p>\n
Your essay should be 500 words in length ( \/- 50 words).
Be sure to include a clear, outlining thesis statement.
Your essay must include appropriate textual evidence, cited in the body of your essay and the Works Cited page according to MLA guidelines.
Indicate which topic you are writing about in your essay’s title (for example \u201cWho Watches the Watchmen: Interrogating the Question of Censorship in Children\u2019s Literature\u201d).
Students must format papers using the MLA style throughout, including in-text citations and the Works Cited page.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s \u201cYoung Goodman Brown\u201d <\/p>\n
Kate Chopin’s \u201cThe Story of an Hour\u201d <\/p>\n
James Joyce’s \u201cAraby\u201d <\/p>\n
Ernest Hemingway’s \u201cHills Like White Elephants\u201d <\/p>\n
Shirley Jackson’s \u201cThe Lottery\u201d <\/p>\n
Margaret Atwood’s \u201cHappy Endings\u201d <\/p>\n
Louise Erdrich\u2019s \u201cThe Red Convertible\u201d <\/p>\n
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s \u201cBirdsong\u201d <\/p>\n
FORMAT: Your essay must adhere to MLA format guidelines (consult Purdue’s MLA guide online).
In particular, this means you must follow MLA guidelines when formatting your essay’s first page (for instance, there is no title page), when formatting your header and any end notes, when documenting quotes and paraphrases, and when formatting your Works Cited list.
You are only required to use primary sources for this assignment; however, if you do consult any secondary sources, then you must also properly document them in the body of the essay and your Works Cited list.
WRITING TIPS: You are advised to begin writing your essay well in advance of the due date.
Ideally, you should take the opportunity to practice each stage of the writing process, such as developing a tentative thesis statement, constructing an outline, writing a rough draft, proofreading and revising the draft, and eventually completing the final draft of your essay.
Please note, however, that your final draft is the only item that will be considered for evaluation.
