He was
the fourth child born to Elias and Flora Call Disney. When Walt was little, his
family moved to a farm near Marceline, Missouri. Here he started his schooling
and showed his first interest in drawing and developed his love for animals (Crowther, n.d.).
The life on the farm was short-lived due to his father’s failed attempt at
farming. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Walt helped his
father with delivering papers (Crowther, n.d.). During his time in Kansas
City Walt studied cartooning and later took classes at Kansas City Art
Institute and School of Design. He sold his first sketches to his neighbor when
he was seven years old (About Walt Disney, n.d.). In 1917 the
family moved back to Chicago and Walt started high school at McKinley High
School (Biography.com Editors, 2014). In 1918 Disney tried to enlist for
the military during World War I and was rejected due to being sixteen years
old. He joined the Red Cross and went overseas to drive an ambulance for a
year. When he returned to Kansas City in he began his career as an advertising
cartoonist.

How the Business Began

In 1919 Walt’s brother Roy got him a job at Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio,
where he met Ub Iwerks. Disney and Iwerks started a small studio in 1922 where
they made one to two minute animated advertising films that were sent to local
movie theaters (Crowther, n.d.). Disney opened his own animation business.
He hired Fred Harman as his first employee and they made a deal with local
theaters to screen their cartoons called Laugh-O-Grams. Walt was able to
purchase his own studio and called it Laugh-O-Grams where he hired Iwerks and
Harmans brother Hugh (Biography.com Editors, 2014). In 1923 Disney had to
file bankruptcy due to the studio becoming burdened with debt. After this he
moved to Hollywood with his brother and Iwerks and that is where the Walt
Disney Studios began.

Business Expansion

Walt Disney Studios made their first deal with Margaret Winkler a New
York distributor. which entailed distributing their Alice cartoons. In the late
1920s the studio created cartoons featuring Mickey Mouse after breaking from their
distributors (Biography.com Editors, 2014). Mickey made his first screen
appearance in Steam Boat Willie in 1928. Disney produced over 100 feature films
and his first full length animated film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in
1937. His last major success was the motion picture Mary Poppins (Biography.com
Editors, 2014). Disney expanded to television series along with opening
Disneyland on July 17, 1955 in Anaheim, California. Over time, Disneyland has
expanded globally to Florida, Tokyo, Paris, and Hong Kong. After Walt passed
away in 1966, his brother carried out his plans to open the theme park in
Orlando, Florida and names it Walt Disney World (About Walt Disney, n.d.).
In 1961 Disney created and funded a new university, the California Institute of
the Arts, known as Cal Arts. He thought of this as the peak of education for
the arts, where people in many forms could work together, dream and develop,
and create the mixture of arts needed for the future (About Walt Disney, n.d.).
Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966.

Overview of the Business
Today

Today Disney has expanded into the streaming market with Disney .
Disney also purchased most of 21st Century Fox in 2019. This business has been
very successful and continues to grow. Walt Disney is not involved in the
business. He passed away in 1966. The business is managed by executive leaders
and a board full of people. The leaders and the board make the decisions
for the business.

References

About Walt Disney. (n.d.). https://d23.com/about-walt-disney/

Biography.com Editors. (2014, April 2). Walt
Disney Biography. https://www.biography.com/business-figure/walt-disney

Crowther, B. (n.d.). Walt
Disney. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Walt-Disney

less

1. In a two- to three-page paper: a. Discuss why you agree or disagree with your classmates’ rationales and how this relates to how you came to your conclusion of who is the most successful entrepreneur. b. In what ways have any of your classmates’ rationales changed your opinion on who you think is the […]

[1
15
post-11960","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-research-paper-writing","tag-business
["GET
