3.3 Negro SpiritualsNo unread replies.No replies.The text doesn’t go into as much depth as about the large body of music we call “*Negro Spirituals” as warrented.\u00a0 \u00a0This music was passed on through the generations, and was later collected by abolitionist\u00a0 musicologists and former enslaved who studied at the newly formed Black Colleges and Universities\u00a0 founded after the Civil War.\u00a0 This music went around the world after the Civil war, sang to audiences\u00a0 in Europe.\u00a0 \u00a0Not only is it the inspiration of other black styles such as gospel music, the music itself is still the material of performing artists from both the classical and the popular world, and remains one of the most beloved, oft performed and studied genres of choral music, performed by choral musicians around the globe to this very day.\u00a0 \u00a0This body of music by long forgotten names still touches the souls of everyone, a testimony to their struggles and undimishable spirit, and one of America’s enduring National Treasures.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n
*\u00a0 \u00a0This now politically incorrect term is still used by scholars\u00a0 to keep the historical context, much in the way institutions such as the\u00a0 “Negro Base Ball League” or the “NAACP” have retained their now “politically incorrect” names.\u00a0 \u00a0Some have adapted a more current term,\u00a0 \u00a0 “African American Spiritual”.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Themes of Spirituals:\u00a0 These songs expressed the lives and hopes of the enslaved.\u00a0 \u00a0Some were songs of hope, even perhaps coded messages how to escape to freedom, or to think of a freedom that would only come with dying and going to heaven.\u00a0 \u00a0 Some were ways to teach the stories of the gospel.\u00a0 \u00a0Some were joyful,\u00a0 escapist of the cruelty they suffered.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n
