As noted in the link, illegal street racing has become a public nuisance since the start of the pandemic. Is it a social problem? A moral panic? What policies should and could be put in place to regulate this behavior? How would they be formed and established? Take what you\u2019ve learned regarding the role of media, public reaction, policymaking and social problems work, as well as the idea of moral panics, to analyze this problematic social phenomenon in terms of problem construction and policy. <\/p>\n
Some things to think about: who are making the claims? Who are the victims and the perpetrators? Who has power? What might an effective policy look like? How will you implement this (think about political opportunities and allies.) Is this an emergency? Would an emergency frame be helpful\/beneficial here? If so, why? <\/p>\n
Papers should be no less than 4 pages in length, no more than 6. Your papers should be well cited and refer to the ideas and concepts that are relevant to the construction of a social problem. Summarize and explain the relevant concepts and their meaning (define your terms) as they relate to your argument and\/or analysis. I will be looking for a clear argument, familiarity with relevant material, and a robust analysis (application of concept to a specific example; employing sociological concepts and theories to answer ‘why’ and \u2018how\u2019). You must use the course materials in your analysis. Take the ideas presented in Best and other texts and apply them to this scenario and example. 10 points will be deducted from your overall grade if you do not use course materials. You must also provide a bibliography\/works cited. This is an analytic academic paper. <\/p>\n
Papers are due by 6pm Friday, July 9th. I will not accept late or emailed papers. Outlines can be submitted until 6:00pm two days prior via email. Take advantage of this \u2013 it is your safety net. <\/p>\n
