Most of our students in BIO 1 are thinking of nursing school as an option. But there are many others as well: Some students would like to be a physician, but have decided that to become a physician takes too long. Some students think the want to be a nurse but later decide on going to medical school. Some students want to be a radiologist. Some want to bea veterinarian. Some aren’t quite sure yet –but the medical field has truly drawn their interest. This paper is designed for you to look at your options –what different fields are available, and what educational journeys are required.First aspect of your paper –employment in the medical field prior to 1900 compared to currently.•Prior to 1900, what was the medical field like? What training was required?•Compare employment prior to 1900 for different people –including women and minorities.•What opportunities are different now versus 1900? Second aspect of your paper -comparisons of training and academic requirements for different fields.•Compare these basic roles within the medical field:oCertified Nursing Assistant; Licensed Vocational Nurse; Registered Nurse.oAdvanced nursing degrees: BSN, MSN, Nurse Practitioner.oPhysician AssistantoPhysician(by the way, if you are a pre-med student, you are a math/science major. But for this paper, I have chosen this option for a specific reason).•Starting this semester, compare time requiredto become the abovemedical professionals. Some notes to remember:oThe RN requires a minimum two-year program.▪An associates degree is required, which includes basic prerequisites of biology 1, human anatomy/physiology,microbiology, chemistry and psychology.▪How long it would take to become an RN? Include all prerequisites, the AA, and the nursing programitself.oNurse practitioners:▪This includes the time required to become an RN.▪Then additional requirements must be met -a bachelorsdegree, plus minimum RN employment and experience hours, then the time it takes to obtain the NP degree.▪Make sure to account for the total time to become an NP.▪Beginning at RCC, how long would it take for you to become an NP?oPhysician Assistant▪Basic requirements include a four-year degree(two of which are at RCC), plus a mastersdegree, plus the required experience and employment(up to 2,500 hours), and then PA school.▪Beginning at RCC, how long would it take for you to become an PA?oMedical school for physicians:▪Many students confuse this.▪Medical school requires a four-year degree, then medical school –which is four moreyears.▪Residency is not medical school.•It is post-graduatetraining.•As a resident physician, you are a physician being paid to continue specific training.•Do not include residency as part of the academic timeframe to become a physician.▪Beginning at RCC, how long would it take for you to become an MD.oCareful analysis of the “time it takes” to reach your careergoal may prove insightful.oYou may discover that if you “settle” on being a nurse, because medical school is “too long” –you may be surprised. What are your specific career interests? What is your educational plan?•What is your career choice? Why did you get interested in the medical profession?•Discuss three reasons why you chose this career.•Do you plan on transferring? Why or why not?oMy family has been in construction forever.oI could have easily gone to RCC for a business degree, and that would have been perfectfor me to take over my family business!oWant to be a phlebotomist or an X-ray technician? Perhaps an associates plus a certificate is all you need!oAre you planning on becoming a medic, as part of your ultimate goal of becoming a firefighter?oAre you planning on becoming an Emergency Room technician? Is this a stepping-stone for another career?oNo need for a bachelors or masters degree? That is the best choice for you.•If you are planningon transferring, where are you planning to transfer to? Why?oPlease don’t answer this with “to whatever school takes me!” That is a thoughtless answer!oIf you are not sure, do some research!oSome schools are better for nursing, some are better for medical school, some are better for becoming a PA, a phlebotomist, a X-ray technician, a clinical techinician–I think you get the idea.oIf you are unsure, do your homework and provide three schools, and tell me why these may be a good choice for you.•Are you planning on graduate school? If so, where, and why? Perhaps this is not needed for you –and that is ok.•Can science (and your interests) intersect? Why or why not? I certainly hope so, but if not, it is ok!

Career and Technical Programs (medical majors)For all students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, you will complete this essay assignment.
