Washington (1856 – 1915) was a slave, a dedicated student, an educator, an American, and a leader in every sense of the word. He also wore many other hats. He was a prolific writer who wrote fourteen books (that we know of), countless speeches, magazine articles, and who knows how many newspaper articles.
One of his books, Character Building, is the focus of this Discussion assignment.
For decades, it has been thought-provoking to this instructor that a century after Booker T. Washington wrote Character Building, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his “I Have a Dream” speech, adeptly uses “character” to prominently remark that one day, his four children will “live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Amazing! I hear and read all of this nonsense about not judging others, yet in one sentence Dr. King destroys that argument by saying that we will judge others based on their character, and he is absolutely correct.
Based on an excerpt from Chapter 26, your 100-word (minimum) response must specifically mention the writer by name and address his assessment of the character and personal responsibility traits of the two boys in that chapter, to include why Washington refers to one of the boys as an “eye-servant.”
Access the Chapter 3 excerpt here. (Links to an external site.)
CAUTION: It is not your job to synopsize or tell the class what Washington wrote; your job is to share with the class your opinion about what Washington wrote. Put another way, do not simply restate or synopsize Dr. Washington’s words.
Quotations in your response will not be counted toward the word count requirement.
NOTE: Canvas “Discussions” is an open forum. Other students in the class will be able to read and comment on your response; however, commenting on another student’s post is optional but not an assignment. Accumulatively, the grades on Discussion assignments count 5% of the course grade.
The initial post by a student for Discussion topics is the only post assigned or credited for submission of any Discussion assignment.
Throughout the course, do not include hyperlinks or attachments in your Discussion comments.
This instructor reserves the prerogative to redact inappropriate comments in all Discussions.
Post Discussion 4 no later than the due date.

IMPORTANT: Do not submit this assignment until Formal Essay 3 has been submitted.
