What I gathered from listening to the podcast was elected officials were not being honest and ignoring the needs of fixing the infrastructure in poor areas. The interesting part was that a lot of the damage done after hurricanes or storms did not come from the intensity of the storm – but came from weak infrastructure and bad zoning. Instead of communicating using the honest, frank, and open approach officials continue to sweep things under the rug because of the all the other problems that come with resolving zoning issues, and all of the money that has to go in to fixing the issues.
Another lesson learned after listening to this podcast was the importance of coordinating and collaborating with other credible sources. Texas officials are going against the advisement of climate experts. Climate experts have said that they need to put into place an effective plan for future hurricanes and storms and that they need strong leadership to help with the recovery and prevention. Also, Texas officials continue to give push back to climate experts stating that they have an “anti-development agenda” and that they are not seeing the bigger picture. Instead of officials wanting to work together to create an effective plan they rather focus on new developments. Elected officials try to justify their actions by saying this is needed to give people jobs and to give people more opportunities to live/spend in different areas. Another point mentioned in the podcast was how realtors were taking signs off the vacant properties that warned potential buyers of the area being in a flood hazard zone. We have come to the point in this world where the dollar is a higher cost over protecting people and their homes.
Resources:
Gladstone, Brooke. “Unnatural Disaster.” On The Media, WNYCSTUDIOS, 1 September 2017, https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/episodes/on-the-media-2017-09-01.

See the link to the article. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/episodes/on-the-media-2017-09-01 1.)
