To complete this assignment, review the attached document: AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding.
Once you complete this coursework you will qualify to sit for the CCA, Certified Coding Associate, exam and, when you are successful, you will receive your entry-level certification in coding. As a coding professional certified by AHIMA you will be expected to adhere to the AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding throughout your coding career.
The purpose of this assignment is to correlate the concepts of ethical coding to what you are learning here at EvCC as you build your coding acumen and prepare to attain your coding certification.
After reviewing the introduction and list of eleven standards of ethical coding in this document from AHIMA, choose one of the standards from standard number 2-6 to address in your assignment. (Standards to be used are included below).
2. Gather and report all data required for internal and external reporting, in accordance with applicable requirements and data set definitions.
3. Assign and report, in any format, only the codes and data that are clearly and consistently supported by health record documentation in accordance with applicable code set and abstraction conventions, and requirements.
4. Query and\/or consult as needed with the provider for clarification and additional documentation prior to final code assignment in accordance with acceptable healthcare industry practices.
5. Refuse to participate in, support, or change reported data and\/or narrative titles, billing data, clinical documentation practices, or any coding related activities intended to skew or misrepresent data and their meaning that do not comply with requirements.
6. Facilitate, advocate, and collaborate with healthcare professionals in the pursuit of accurate, complete and reliable coded data and in situations that support ethical coding practices.
Once you have selected the standard to discuss, read the How To Interpret the Standards of Ethical Coding for your chosen standard. The one or two sentence standard is defined with examples in the How To section.
Now write a brief informational paper on this one ethical standard.
Include a title, your name and the class in the header for your paper

Your paper will have a body, the informational paragraph (s). In the body, using some of the detail in the how to for that standard, help the reader understand the purpose of the standard.
Your paper should include an introduction wherein you define AHIMA’s Standards of Ethical coding and their purpose. Next, in the body of the paper, identify the ethical standard you have chosen by number and title and explain what the standard means to you. Finally, in your summary, briefly why you chose this standard.
In the summary, tie the standard and the purpose of the standard to something you have learned in this coding class.
