Background
Response to a communicable disease outbreak or other large-scale public health threat can quickly overwhelm local healthcare resources. The United States government plans for these scenarios. What is often not considered is the significant surge in need for additional health-care resources, which is lacking in the US. The public health system and hospitals could quickly be overrun if even a small percentage of the estimated people became sick, especially in a pandemic type event. In a situation like this, it is expected that there would be a serious shortage of equipment, pharmaceuticals, and personnel. Research has demonstrated a perception of threat and efficacy as key determinants in the willingness of health care workers to respond to disasters.

Utilizing current academic peer-reviewed journals (within the last 5 years) you will examine how healthcare workers function during a disaster scenario.
What are some of the risks to healthcare workers?
