You may choose to use online resources, such as google maps, to learn more about your neighbourhood rather than be outside.\u00a0 If you are living with other family members, you might survey their understanding of food related resources in the neighbourhood to gather a fuller picture of the situation. <br \/>\u00a0 <br \/>You will conduct a case study on the food environment in your neighbourhood. Neighbourhoods are food environments, with corner stores, restaurants, supermarkets, farmers markets, food banks, mobile carts, shelters, community gardens, school food programs, etc.\u00a0 But these food environments are often not conducive to population health and sustainability, i.e., too much junk food, inaccessible to low mobility residents, unaffordable good food offerings, culturally inappropriate, etc. <br \/>\u00a0 <br \/>As the course unfolds, I want you to get to know your food environment.\u00a0 What do you observe about both the problems in your neighbourhood and the solutions?\u00a0 The lectures and discussions will provide you new knowledge and skills for understanding the food environment.\u00a0 Read as well, within the first 3 weeks, 3 chapters from Critical Perspectives in Food Studies as they\u2019ll provide some context: <br \/>Chapter 3 \u2013 You are what you eat: enjoying (and transforming) food culture <br \/>Chapter 5 \u2013 Constructing healthy eating \/ constructing self <br \/>Chapter 19 \u2013 Municipal governance and urban food systems <br \/>\u00a0 <br \/>Although I don\u2019t want you do to do a detailed community assessment (that\u2019s way too much work), take a look at the Sandy Hill (Ottawa) assessment to help you observe your neighbourhood (http:\/\/justfood.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Wheres_the_Food-Sandy_Hill_research_compilation.pdf) <br \/>\u00a0 <br \/>I want you to present your observations and reflections in a journal style, identifying: <br \/>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a03 problems\u00a0 (Part I) and <br \/>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 3 solutions (Part II) you observe in your neighbourhood. <br \/>Note: Some people like to do scrapbook style with photos or clippings, but it has to be done in a way you can submit to us electronically via EClass. Keep the entries to 250 words\/problem or solution. Guiding questions: What do you notice? What are some descriptions of what you use? What do you think and feel about what you observe? Are you dismayed, pleased, perplexed, angered, eager to get involved, etc.? Do the solutions appear to have a positive impact? <br \/>\u00a0 <br \/>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Top marks go to insightful observations on what you observe. <br \/>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Low marks go to journals with observations that are largely descriptive rather than interpretative. <br \/>Note that students have a tendency to focus on fast food restaurants because in many communities they are the most visible signs of the food system.
