  1. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper: Washington post, 1301 K  Street NW, Washington, DC 20071.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Topic or Issue: Differences \/ limitations in Nurse Practitioners\u2019 (NPs) scope of practice regulations by state boards<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There is a lack of enough primary care providers in the US. The difficulty is worsened by expanding health care coverage by the ACA. Hard-hit by this crisis are those living in rural areas, mostly older, with chronic diseases, sicker, and consequently need primary care services most (ACA 2010).  Studies by IOM indicate that NPs are essential in providing better access, quality, and improved patient experience at a lower cost. Nurse practitioners have advanced clinical knowledge and training and can help patients in need of primary care needs. There is growing support from researchers and policymakers to use nurse practitioners to occupy the vacuum created by the unavailability of primary care physicians (Beurhaus, 2018)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The difficulty in utilizing the inherent capacity of nurse practitioners to increase access to primary care is the many scope-of-practice regulations from state boards that inhibit their scope of practice (Kuo et al. 2013). IOM suggests that these regulations never keep pace with the evolution of advanced practice nursing over the past 40 years. Without proof, some physicians and professional medical associations have defended their support for such policies because they are crucial to guard the public against low-quality providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
