Question 1- Source Analysis:
Dalrymple\u2019s School Begins is commenting on the U.S. claim that its imperialism was \u201cspreading democracy.\u201d Dalrymple did not think the U.S. claim was sincere. The classroom in School Begins is not about teaching math, science, or English. It is about who is included in self-rule \u2013 who is part of the democracy. Dalrymple used the images in his cartoon to question the sincerity of the U.S.\u2019s rhetoric that it was \u201cspreading democracy.\u201d As you analyze the images within the cartoon consider what each image is saying about democracy. Complete the source analysis chart below by analyzing the image of the Native American siting on the other side of the room.<\/p>\n
Question 2 \u2013 Connect:
Base your answer to this question on the two assigned readings within the lesson \u2013 the interview with a Yale Professor and the blog on Hawaiian Food. Answer should be at least one paragraph in length (6-8 sentences).
In your own words, summarize Professor Freedman\u2019s conclusion about how to define American cuisine. Does Hawaiian cuisine, as discussed in the PBS article, go along with his definition of American cuisine? Explain your answer. <\/p>\n

How does what you or your family eat fit into the history of American cuisine? Can find your own story within the broader picture that Professor Freedman provides? Explain why or why not.<\/p>\n
