He provides interesting insight to how societies have viewed violence over time, and how a change in the paradigm might allow for more effective solutions to reducing some types of violent crime. Some of you may have already looked at some of this from links the powerpoints.
Dr. Slutkin
The second link is for a lecture by Dr. Phillip Zimbardo discussing Milgram’s experiment on obedience to authority and Bandura’s observation of dehumanization. For this forum, I am most concerned with students watching from about minutes 20 – 32. If you are interested, the entire lecture (about one hour) provides a fascinating insight into the evil capacity of humans, but be prepared for a few graphic images from the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. He also discusses his Stanford Prison Experiment if you watch the entire lecture. Focus on how evil begets evil and how heroism begets heroism: Journey From the Psychology of Evil to the Psychology of Heroism
Honestly, I like to allow students leeway in their forum posts as I want to see the diversity of interests/approaches to critical analysis of the provided resources. So rather than a simple review, I want to see a critical analysis of the material utilizing other material/theory/historical context from the first section, and maybe even application of current events/issues.
I want one original post (minimum 250 words, but I would expect longer) and two responses to an original post for proper credit. Keep in mind, a “C” is average minimum work (a basic review), and higher “B” or “A” grades require more effort, specifically synthesizing a variety of material/theory/historical context from multiple areas of section one to the material from the resources. For the most part, these will be graded on an A, B or C basis unless a lack of effort requires a lower grade.

How might culture influence both perceptions and actions?
