(Or, you could argue that they move the discussion of feminism backward.) Be sure to explain this fully.
Consider points of commonality and/or difference in their approaches, providing your own critical analysis on the question you have identified and brought out in these authors’ arguments.
For example, a straightforward approach to this task would be to focus on oppression, which is a huge issue for feminism from its beginnings until now. Why does oppression matter so much to feminists? Discuss the three authors we read on oppression (Frye, Young, and Bartky) showing how they advance our understanding of oppression or seek to overcome oppression. Another approach would be to consider what “gender” means. Consider three of the four authors we read on gender (Lloyd, Antony, Butler, and Haslanger) and perhaps show how their works build on each other, refine each other, criticize each other. Part of doing this will be first showing that you’re clear on what question they’re asking—and why it matters. Part of this will be showing what the authors’ arguments are. Part of it will be drawing comparisons between their works and developing your arguments for these comparisons. At some point along the way, you will need to address your own view on the question you choose and provide your own sense of how the question should be answered. double spaced with 1 inch margins (this makes it much easier for me to read and comment).
Length? Let say 4-6 pages as a general rule.
There is no minimum or maximum word count, but this is meant to be a fairly substantial essay. If you find the essay is, for instance, less than three pages, you surely haven’t quite covered all the material you need to. Remember, you have three authors to discuss and critically analyze. Even though you will not be able to cover everything these authors say/argue, it will take a while to develop your analysis. On the other hand, you want to keep your essays concise, so going seven pages or more means you may be doing too much or not be focused enough in your topic. There is some leeway here, but if you have to err, err on the side of including too much material and not too little.
Grading:
There are two guides for how to write philosophy papers in the modules: one I wrote and one from Harvard University, which provides some nice, short examples. Distilled to the simplest form, I will look for four things:
That you identify and explain the significance of some question feminists ask;
That you demonstrate that you understood the arguments given by our authors;
That you can explain/defend the connections among your authors concerning the question you choose;
That you take a position and defend it adequately. In other words, try to answer the question.
MY 3 AUTHOURS ARE MARILYN FRYE, ISIS YOUNG AND SANDRA BARTKY

(This may be the obvious topics of “oppression” or “gender” but it could also be “intersectionality” or other theme that matters to you that you can connect with the readings we’ve done.)
