According to this work, there are four basic types of relations that can be defined succinctly as follows:Communal Sharing is a relationship in which people treat some dyad or group as equivalent and undifferentiated with respect to the social domain in question.Authority Ranking is a relationship in which people have asymmetric positions in a linear hierarchy in which subordinates defer, respect, and (perhaps) obey, while superiors take precedence and take pastoral responsibility for subordinates.Equality Matching is a relationship in which people keep track of the balance or difference among participants and know what would be required to restore balance.Market Pricing is a relationship in which people are oriented to socially meaningful ratios or rates such as prices, wages, interest, rents, tithes, or cost-benefit analyses. In some social domains, relations might be more characteristic of one of these four types. For example, one might assume that relations among friends tend to follow a principle of communal sharing or that relations in the military are typically based on a principle of authority ranking. However, it could also be that each type of relations come into play, at least to some extent, in a given social domain. In this activity, you will be asked to generate concrete examples of interactions or behaviors illustrating that each of the four principles can be relevant in a particular domain. The domains that we ask you to consider are: family relations, relations at work, and international relations. For each domain, provide a brief example of how the types of relations distinguished by Fiske might come into play.
