1. Your first task is to read the following article from in the June 3, 2003, issue
of Harper’s Magazine:

2. The article mentions each of the following collapsed societies in the second paragraph. In your own document, create a table similar to the one below. Conduct brief research in order to fill in the information called out under the headings in the table .

3. Diamond argues that three dangerous misconceptions underlie the tendency
of political leaders to pay too little attention to environmental concerns. In the
same document as your chart, include no more than 3 paragraphs to identify
and explain each of these misconceptions. Your explanation should be written
in your own words and address why the author says each of the
misconceptions are dangerous.

those affecting the modern United States. Use the information from the Jared
Diamond article to inform your responses in the table.

1. Write a brief summary of any similarities or differences you notice between the
situations of the Ancient Maya compared to Modern America. <\/p>\n
2. The author emphasizes three reasons among many that help explain why,
despite overwhelming evidence of looming environmentally-caused social
breakdown, that \u201cthose in power. . .[don\u2019t]. . .get the message\u201d. In your own
words, explain how these reasons might apply to situations for the Ancient
Maya or Modern America. Make use of supporting information from the text.
