Our most important task will be to separate the sensational from the credible. We will explore the historical and cultural background(s) of the creation and use of these texts. We will read as much as possible from the texts themselves (in translation, of course). Our goal is to appreciate the diversity and complexity of this ancient community. Over 900 individual documents have been recovered from the area surrounding Qumran. Over 200 of these are biblical manuscripts that represent every book of the Jewish Bible except Esther, with Isaiah, Psalms, and Deuteronomy the most prominent.
