Please make ample use of course content.

Outside research sources are not required, but are definitely allowed.

For the analysis and recommendation related questions (options 1 and 2), an essay format is not required. Make sure headings and sections are clearly laid out. Should have a logical flow.

Write in a solid tone. Clear grammar, sentences, paragraphs, and punctuation are required.

Try and avoid personal pronouns, especially where you trying to convince.

Apply solid and detailed support/analysis for your answer, going beyond what is immediately obvious. Show good knowledge of an array of topics from the course—not just one chapter.

Option 1

For this assignment, you will be provided with a case study of a particular conflict situation in a business setting, caused by intercultural communication shortfalls. After critically examining the case, you are asked to write an analysis and recommendations.

An analysis: answer the following questions, among others:

What is the context and the background of the key characters?

Who are the principal stakeholders involved, and what are the stakes in resolving the conflict situation for each of them?

Which are the critical issues in the case? What went wrong, and why?

What are the communication deficiencies that have led to the conflict situation?

Recommendations
How do we see the issues in the case manifested in day-to-day life?

What interpersonal steps should be taken?

What intercultural communication training should the Management provide? What would you include in the training? Base your suggestions on theory to provide a convincing foundation for your proposed training approach.

Option 2. Choose one of the questions below:

Do some research to ascertain a general picture of the cultural composition—and potential issues—within an organization of your choice, or even for an organization that seeks to address clients of varying cultures.

Give a summary and analysis of the present situation. Remember to include both strengths and weaknesses.

Prepare a recommendation report for management as to what areas need to be addressed and how you would suggest addressing them. Base your suggestions on theory/course content to provide a convincing foundation for your proposed training approach.

Some potential clients: Ontario Ministry of Education, University of Ottawa, your own place of work, Ontario Science council responsible for Covid policy…

Option 3. Choose a topic from the questions posted in the course slides—Journal questions or otherwise. Please present a topic option to me no later than November 12. Where possible, address the all of the following requirements.

Provide solid, course-based supporting details. The more nitpicky the better. Show that you have digested the course content well. Feel free to read further around a given topic, as the text provides only an introduction.

Provide a weighing out of course concepts. What works/doesn’t work, what’s relevant/irrelevant and why?

Remember that the spine of your answer needs to be InterCultural Communication.

Provide relevance to daily life and ample examples.

Be wary of cliche’s and off-the-cuff unsupported answers.

May combine questions.

I will leave the structure up to you (either headings and sections or a headings-free essay). That said, your answer should not read like a shopping list. Use solid paragraphs and clear grammar and punctuation. Having an introduction to lay out the purpose, context and approach is always good, as is having some kind of tie-up conclusion. Whatever you choose, there should be a clear and logical flow to your answer.

Basic rubric:

A: provides an answer in a clear, near error-free text, with ample and concrete detail. Most importantly, the answer is unique, not predictable, and is carefully considered. The student takes intellectual risks, and may disagree with a prevailing conclusion.

B: meets the basic requirements of the assignment, albeit with some grammar and punctuation errors throughout the text. Most importantly, it is somewhat predictable, lacks originality and does not take any risks.

C: while the ideas might be interesting there is a general lack of care. Grammar, punctuation and structure render the text somewhat unclear.

D: text is quite unclear. Doesn’t meet the requirements of the assignment.

Term Paper– Due Thursday Nov 16th Length: 1500 words, double space.
