Those sources can be academic and peer-reviewed chapters, textbooks, and articles, or, they can be non-academic newspaper and magazine articles (in print or online).

When you borrow the exact words of another author, you must place those words within quotation marks, and provide an accompanying citation clearly indicating where that quote can be found. In Pol 1020, you can use a simple in-text author-date-page system to cite your sources. For example,

Example # 1 (Quotation): Edmund Burke— “the ‘founding father’ of British Conservatism”— was no “reactionary,” but may even have exhibited a certain degree of political “sympathy for the American rebels” (Harrison and Boyd 2018, 176).

However, even when you paraphrase another author in your own words, you must still provide an accompanying citation. For example,

Example # 2 (Paraphrase): The founder of Toryism, Edmund Burke, was not a regressive thinker; he even empathized with the cause of the American Revolution (Harrison and Boyd 2018, 176).

Although the above are my own words, which is why they are not placed within quotation marks, the idea or argument they express is not originally mine, which is why a citation is placed at the end of that sentence. Paraphrasing without providing credit (i.e., a citation) to the original source is a form of academic misconduct, specifically plagiarism.

When you paraphrase, make sure that you thoroughly reword content in your own language. When paraphrases are too close to the original language (e.g., use the same phrases, change only a few words, etc.), then that can also be construed as academic misconduct even when a citation accompanies that statement. For example, the following could be considered an unacceptable paraphrase:

Example # 3 (Poor Paraphrase): Edmund Burke— the founding father of British Conservative thinking— was no reactionary, but may even have exhibited a certain degree of empathy for the American rebels (Harrison and Boyd 2018, 176).

Quotations of 4 or more lines of length should be presented as ‘block quotes’ so that they are placed in single-spaced, size 10 font, with the margins reduced on both left and right sides.

The rest of the paper should be formatted as follows: double-spaced, Times New Roman font, size 12, 2.0 centimetre margins on all four sides. No other headers or page numbers needed.

A title page which includes a meaningful title, your name, student number, and email address should accompany the essay. A ‘Works Cited’ page containing all of your bibliographical sources should also be included with the paper.

I reserve the right to penalize late submissions by up to 5% per day.

Remember, this is an individual, not a group, assignment. As such, students are expected to compose it on their own. Composing this assignment in concert with others can be regarded as a form of academic misconduct.

Case Study Task: Analyze a specific example of authoritarian populism (leftwing or rightwing) using a selection of the concepts and theories studied in the Unit V political psychology readings by Hofstadter, Abromeit, and Hellinger.

Case study Length: 4-6 Pages (Not Including Title & Bibliography) In their Case Study Projects, students are being evaluated primarily on (i) whether they can directly demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the relevant required readings, and (ii) apply that knowledge to a critical analysis of a contemporary issue in politics.
