Despite knowing the consequences for an academic integrity infraction, why do some students still falsify their work?

What are the most challenging APA formatting issues for you? Why do you find these areas so challenging? What resources will you use to overcome these challenges?

READINGS:

Academic Integrity Module – Tutorial (from Med Profession University)

A good place to start is with a couple of definitions of integrity in general. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary: Integrity is defined as “the quality of being honest and fair; the state of being complete or whole; a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values.” Other words for integrity include goodness, honesty, morality, righteousness, uprightness, and virtue. Really, integrity applies to all aspects of our lives. This includes both personal and professional interactions. Nurses value integrity when we care for our patients so this same dedication to integrity applies to the academic setting. Did you know that Americans periodically respond to surveys on the most trusted profession in the United States? Gallup polls are commonly administered. “At the end of the year when medical workers have braided the exposure to the coronavirus to provide life-saving care. Americans have become more likely to laud the honesty and ethics of nurses, medical doctors, and pharmacists. Still, nurses remain the undisputed leader as they had been for nearly two decades. Nurses earn a record 89%, very high or high score for their honesty and ethics this year, four percentage points greater than their prior high last recorded in 2019.” (Saad, 2020) These are some awesome statistics for us to consider! When thinking further about integrity, five core values come to mind. These are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. Think about each of these for a moment. What do each of these values mean to you as an individual and how do they impact the decisions you make in your life? This background discussion about integrity brings us to more specifics and that is the Academic Integrity Policy at Med Professionals University. Because we care about your success, we want to ensure you understand what academic integrity means at Med Professionals and ways to avoid issues during your time as a Med Professionals University student. The purpose of the Academic Integrity Policy is to have ideas and learning form the core of the Med Professionals community. In all centers of education, learning is valued and honored. No learning community can thrive if its members seek to establish an unfair advantage over their fellow students. Med Professionals University’s academic standards are based on the pursuit of knowledge and assume a high level of integrity in every member of the Med Professionals community. When this trust is violated, the community suffers injury and must act to ensure that its standards remain meaningful. Academic integrity directly relates to the work you do as a student with Med Professionals University. Violations of academic integrity, for the purposes of this policy, are those that permit students to gain an unfair advantage over other students. Any purposeful deception in the preparation and/or submission of papers and assignments and completion of exams, tests, or quizzes is considered cheating, and is a violation of academic integrity. The act of copying includes use of visual, oral, printed matter (including notes) or electronic sources. Examples of copying include: Any act of taking information from another student by any means to obtain an advantage for oneself. Any act of conveying information to another student for the purpose of providing an unfair advantage to that student. Any act of representing another’s work, whether copyrighted or not, as one’s own. Another’s work includes, but is not limited to, homework, written papers, examinations, laboratory assignments, published work, et cetera. Any discussion about Academic Integrity would not be complete without information on plagiarism. Plagiarism is a term that is common in academic settings. Med Professionals University is no different. As a Med Professionals student, it is your responsibility to become familiar with the policies and procedures outlined in the student handbook. Plagiarism is defined as the intentional or unintentional act of representing someone else’s work as one’s own. In addition, plagiarism includes using the essential style and manner of expression of a source as if it were one’s own. Examples specified in the student handbook include, A submitted paper or other written assignment that contains word-for-word passages of others’ work without proper acknowledgment. Paraphrasing the work of others, including specific information or ideas that are not properly acknowledged or credited. Or two or more submitted papers that contain resemblance decidedly beyond the bounds of a reasonable coincidence. Here are some examples of plagiarism that you may not have considered previously. Copying and pasting information or using the exact words of the source even if this is cited (unless quotation marks are used). Excessive copying even if contained within quotation marks, is also unacceptable. Submitting another person’s work as your own. Sharing your work with others in any manner (sharing with a friend or uploading a paper to a public website). Or self-plagiarism. Collusion is a popular topic these days. But what does collusion mean in the academic setting? You might be surprised to learn that collusion is: Unauthorized sharing or collaboration. Any act of two or more students actively cooperating on any assignment when the instructor has not expressly permitted such activity, including: homework, papers completed outside of normal classroom hours, in-class assignments, laboratory exercises or reports, take-home exams, etc. Any individual representing another student or being represented by another person for purposes of taking an exam, authoring a paper or assignment, including homework, or fulfilling the obligation of another student in any way. You may ask… does plagiarism only apply to assignments? No, plagiarism can occur in both the discussions and assignments. All work submitted to Med Professionals University is to be your own original work with proper citations and crediting sources. All professors at Med Professionals have been educated to be alert for and detect plagiarism. You may wonder what will happen if your professor suspects an academic integrity violation or cheating? Your professor will share the concern with their Assistant Dean of Faculty and an investigation will be conducted. You will be notified of the concern by your professor and given the opportunity to share how you completed the work in question. Concerns, investigations and management of incidents and sanctions can easily be avoided by being honest and applying other core values presented earlier in this presentation. What are some ways to ensure that you avoid plagiarism concern? If you observe or suspect a violation of academic integrity policy, report it to one of the following: The professor teaching the course or the online program dean or designee. You can also make it difficult and unacceptable for other students to cheat by: denying others access to your computer programs and not sharing your login credentials. Keeping your computer password, a secret. And refusing to share your written work with other students. Other ways to ensure that you avoid a plagiarism concern include Avoiding the temptation to cheat via communication technology, such as your mobile device, tablet, et cetera. Google™ searches and plagiarism checkers can detect plagiarism on papers and exams in a matter of minutes. Become familiar with the American Psychological Association, or APA, method of documenting your sources. Clarifying assignments with your professor. When in doubt, always reach out and seek answers to your questions. And lastly, one way to avoid plagiarism when reading articles or websites is to read the information and take notes in your own words. Then, paraphrase the notes a second time when writing the assignment or discussion post. This will help avoid using the same words from the original source. These are all easy ways to avoid academic integrity issues. Shown here are some tips for successfully submitted your graded work. Med Professionals encourages the use of the assignment guidelines and rubrics, the library, the Writing Center, APA, Academic Writer, Grammarly, but most importantly, your professor. Please avoid using another student’s paper as a guide or example and any tutoring sites that may be predatory in nature, such as those shown on this slide. Unfortunately, there are people who make a living by writing papers and charging you, the student. Ghostwriters charge a fee to write your paper and are not tutors; do not use these predators. Please use the resources available through Med Professionals University to assist you with scholarly writing and ensure you are not being misled. Wordsmithing occurs when students use previously submitted assignments or discussions and slightly change the words to make it appear to be their own original work. “Turn-It-In” often flags these assignments as suspicious, so please do not let this happen to you. Patchwriting occurs when the original words of an author are rearranged and used in an assignment. Rather than taking the author’s words and putting them in your own original words and crediting the author. Patchwriting is dishonest and does not reflect the thoughts of you, the student. Keep in mind, your professor knows your writing style and will notice a change if someone ever been you prepares your work. This is a tough question, but it needs to be answered as one aspect of our academic integrity discussion. Is it ever appropriate to share or even sell assignments to an Internet site or another student? The answer unequivocally is no. You may not sell or share any of your work online or with another student for submission. This is a violation of the Professional Conduct Policy and an indirect violation of the Academic Integrity policy. Are you familiar with “Turn-It-In”? If you are, you may have asked, why does Med Professionals University use it? Here are the answers: “Turn-It-In” is a software program that compares your paper to billions of pages of active and archived Internet information, student papers previously submitted to “Turn-It-In”, and thousands of periodicals, journals, and publications. Do you realize that as a Med Professionals University student, you agree that by taking a course, ALL your required assignments and discussions may be subject to submission for textual similarity review by “Turn-It-In”.com? In other words, your professor is not obligated to ask your permission to do this. This may be completed without your permission or your knowledge.
