One thing that was important to note was that this was something that Pastor Brian was extremely excited about and something he essentially does for a living. In Phoenix, he is on the board for human sex trafficking for both the mayor and the governor. The Phoenix Dream Center has several different programs to help woman who have been involved in human sex trafficking, no matter if they are 10 years old or 40 years old. Because of the programs that he oversees and has implemented, he has not only found favor within the local government, but also with the FBI and Secret Service.

Pastor Brian believes that as Christians, it is their job to be a part of their city and local government. He references Matthew 28 which is where Jesus give the Great Commission to not only 500 people at that time but also to every future Christians. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (ESV). Pastor Brian believes that “it is our job to be the difference in this hurting world. We have to be the ones that go rather than sit back and wait for an opportunity to arise” (Steele). When asked what may hinder Christians from getting involved in their city or government, he had one simple word to answer that “pride” (Steele). He then elaborated and explained what he meant by that answer. Pride is the root of all sin and unfortunately is a big reason in why our world is the way that is today (Steele). He eluded to how Christians want to do the “fun” thing and do what is comfortable rather than doing what is Biblically right and what they are called to do (Steele). Clearly, having a Matthew 28 mindset shows that Christians need to be doers rather than watchers.

When discussing specifics of how Christians can better become better involved in their city and local government and what some tangible steps were, Pastor Steele had many solutions to these questions. “The easiest way to get involved in your government is meeting them” (Steele). He shared how the government is there to support and serve the people and in order to do so effectively, they need to get to know the people they are serving (Steele). Christians can also easily get involved with their city. “Everywhere you look there is always going to be a need, we need to be intentional with how we look in order to see those opportunities” (Steele). Pastor Brian shared that as Christians it needs to be our job to serve the needy, feed the homeless, care for the elderly, raise up foster care kids, not the government. “Where in the Bible does it say that the government is going to solve all of our problems? Partnering and honoring the authority is important but it is not their job to do the churches job. It is time people started relying more heavily on the church rather than the government” (Steele). In closing, a few ideas Pastor Brian had about getting involved in the community included: serving at local nonprofits like a food bank or for an organization like Habitat for Humanity. “It is important to remember that God has entrusted us with everything, we need to do our part and show and give Him honor in how we act and treat that” (Steele).

Questions:

1.
