No textbook is able to include all the photographers/artists working in a certain time period. Therefore, to support your understanding and to build up your knowledge, attached is a list of photographers working between the years 1960 – 1979. Please note that some of these photographers may have been active in the years before or after 1960 – 1979.

Exercise #3 requires a bit of analysis. Similar to exercise #1, you must choose an artist with the same first letter last name as yours. However, some of the questions below are different than previous exercises.

Choose a photographer from this list who shares the same first letter last name as yours. For example, if your last name begins with the letter B, then you pick an artist with a last name that begins with the letter B. If there are more than 1 name listed, choose one that you have not reported on previously.

Answer the following questions in order:

Introduce the photographer. Give us a little of his/her background. Tell us why he/she is notable.

Choose two of her/his photographs and embed/paste/attach them onto your answer.

Describe in details the images you just embedded/pasted/attached (at this point, you should know how to describe an image in detail because you learned how to do that in the Photograph Analysis exercises). Describe the context (of the situation/time) in which the photographer took those images. What was she/he trying to convey? Was she/he successful in telling their story?

List 2 references where you found information about the artist and/or the image.

Part 2

Photograph Analysis Exercise #3 (The questions are arranged differently so read carefully)

As always you may want to look at examples in the Resources module.

Please look carefully at the Embedded photograph. Write down your observations in the following way (follow my numbering sequence please):

Formal Analysis

Describe visual elements, i.e. line, shape, size, texture, color/value, and space.

Look for composition components such as light, repetition, angle/vantage point, balance, foreground/midground/background, contrast, etc.

Consider the photographer’s decisions about the composition (the arrangement of visual elements and composition components), what is/are the photographer’s intention? Do you (as a viewer) see the same thing? Or do you see something else? This part is about your observation of the photograph + your assumptions + your conclusions. (15 pts).

*You must use at least 8 of the terms listed on the vocabulary list or on any of the supporting documents in the Resources: Photograph Analysis Module. Highlight each term you use.

Part 3

As you recently read in your Ang textbook, the Great Depression gave birth to many great social documentary photographers. War World II took propaganda photography to another level. These two forms of photography (social documentary and propaganda) have been and can be mixed in ways that sometimes tell the difference is hard. Sometimes, the usage of a photograph for propaganda purposes is beyond the photographer’s control. It is often done in the editorial room.

Directions:

Read the directions in its entirety before you start your discussion.

Browse the articles on the Documenting Social Issues links below.

http://www.motherjones.com/media/2015/02/ken-light-american-stories-photos-60s (Links to an external site.)

http://www.berkeleyside.com/2015/02/19/exposing-a-tumultuous-era-photographer-ken-light/ (Links to an external site.)

https://www.lensculture.com/articles/ken-light-what-s-going-on (Links to an external site.)

http://photowings.org/ken-light-continuing-the-photo-documentary-tradition-in-the-21st-century/ (Links to an external site.)

http://www.ucreative.com/features/featured-photographer-interview-social-documentary-photographer-ken-light/ (Links to an external site.)

Ted Talk Links that may help you:

http://www.ted.com/talks/jonathan_klein_photos_that_changed_the_world (Links to an external site.)

http://www.ted.com/talks/sebastiao_salgado_the_silent_drama_of_photography (Links to an external site.)

http://www.ted.com/talks/james_nachtwey_s_searing_pictures_of_war (Links to an external site.)

3. Post your answer to my questions below:
Give one example of a photograph that helped change the course of history.
