Definition and

4

Negative impacts of tourism

Topic: Negative impacts of tourism.

Definition and why I chose the topic

Tourism involves people traveling to other regions for pleasure and leisure. Most of the developing countries and even those that have already developed are keen on ensuring that they maintain good relations with other nations to enhance tourism in their nations. The reason for this is because tourism helps improve the economic situations in countries through various ways such as job creation. However, tourism is not good all through, but still, many studies have been focused on shining a light on the positive impacts of tourism. Although it is not common knowledge, just as tourism strings along with it many benefits, it also brings about adverse effects on both the people and the environment. The reason why I chose this topic is that, by measuring the negative impacts of tourism, it is then possible for individuals to weigh them against benefits and see whether the difference goes to the positive or the negative sides (Canteiro et al., 2018). Where the adverse impacts outweigh the positive ones, people can find ways to bring the situation back to an equilibrium.

Thesis statement

Regardless of the many benefits that the government, individuals, and the economy enjoy from tourism, adverse impacts are also felt from it, affecting the environment and the people and their culture.

Supporting Points

Point 1- Tourism brings about change in people’s ways of doing things

When tourists visit the place, they are always eager to learn about the cultures of the new location. Therefore, they join cultural dances and festivals to understand the culture of the places they have visited. Although they have good intentions, they end up eroding the very culture they wanted to learn about. They do this through the way they talk and also the way they dress (Shahzalal 2016). The people from the communities they visit will admire their clothing and opt to start dressing like the tourists.

Point 2- When mass tourism occurs, environmental impacts such as soil erosion may be experienced

Mass tourism is an instance when extremely many tourists visit one place at a single time. When visiting the said place, the tourists will go sightseeing or drives. All these activities will affect the soil’s structure, making it weak and hence causing soil erosion.

Other environmental impacts that may be experienced include littering in water bodies such as oceans hence causing water pollution (MacNeill & Wozniak 2018).

Point 3- Small companies are disadvantaged

In most instances, since tourists are traveling for the sole purpose of enjoying themselves, they prefer to live in luxurious hotels, shop at expensive malls, and enjoy the deluxe things in life (Postma & Schmuecker 2017). As a result, small local businesses will not benefit from tourism, and at times, some of them are closed down because of a lack of flow of customers.

Point 4- Mass tourism leads to people spending extended periods in traffic

When too many tourists visit one region at the same time, overcrowding is paramount to occur. This overcrowding also leads to more prolonged than usual traffic jams. These traffic congestions, in turn, lead to air pollution (Castela 2018).

References

Canteiro, M., Córdova-Tapia, F., & Brazeiro, A. (2018).
