The adolescent’s brain is being strongly influenced by the amygdala. I believe once Gary’s brain is fully developed, he will be able to make better decisions. His brain will do anything that his friends tell him to do because his decisions making is not fully developed. Once is fully developed, he will be able to make better decisions.

Question 2: A lot of times, during the early teen years, the reasoning is often self-focused. Teenagers may think their private experiences are unique. This is something that parents could not understand. (Soomo Webtext, 2) This tells that Gary’s decision-making is all about what his friends think of him. As Gary’s decisions can be bad, he needs to be guided to the right path.

Question 3: I would advise Gloria to have a conversation with Gary in regards to his recent behavior. A punishement might not be the best idea. His decisions can be treated now that he’s a teenager. I have a little brother with who we stopped being close for a couple of months because he made new friends when I started High School and he stayed in Middle School. His behavior changed and his decision-making changed as well. I started by having conversations with him and advising him how friends can sometimes tell you to make bad decisions that can benefit them but actually can hurt you. After a few conversations, he started being a lot closer again. I would recommend Gloria to start with having conversations and advising him to make better decisions that will not hurt his future.

Question 4: I believe she feels destroyed. Her heart is destroyed. I remember when I used to make bad decisions and I could see my parent’s disappointment. I used to say that I would stop making bad decisions but as a teenager, I would always want to get in trouble in school. I remember when I got suspended for talking back at my teacher and when I got home my parents just told me that I was becoming the opposite person they had raised. This one time was when it made me realize that all I was doing for my friends were hurting other people and I stopped. I thought I was being the cool guy but even after I stopped, my friends were still there to support me.

(Soomo Webtext, p. 3.4)

(Soomo Webtext, p. 3.5)

PSY101 CASE STUDY #1 – WEEK4 PSY101 CASE STUDY #1 – WEEK4 1 1 Walter Mena Smarter Decision Making through Psychology October 31, 2021 Question 1: The older human brain is fully developed compared to adolescents/children who are still developing it and can make it a lot harder to make a great decision.
