I believe God should be the judge of death weather humans believe it’s right or wrong. On another hand the death penalty has been around forever, and I some say its justice, and some say it’s wrong. As I reflect on this subject, I realized that I have a child and a bunch of nieces, nephews, and God kids who I love unconditionally, and I could not imagine how I would feel if someone I knew in my circle of life was a victim of sexual assault. Receiving the death penalty for killing police officers and public figures makes no difference to me We all are humans, and our lives should be valued the same.

QUESTION 2- After viewing the video and looking up additional information on the John Hinkley Jr. case that involves him shooting President Ronald Reagan to assassinate him. I believe his release from a mental health hospital was right for the powers that be and their level of comfortability letting him be apart of society. The government has a history of treating individuals different because of different reasons but I can’t ignore the fact that mental health is a real issue, and it can affect anyone. I also believe that everyone should have the chance to be better if possible because we never know why an individual make the choices they make. I think it was okay for him to be released from the mental health hospital for some many years especially if he conducted himself well while completing his sentence but while he’s out in society and dealing with other individuals he should be watched for a good period.

Student response #2

Good afternoon,

I will be answering question one and question three.

The first question is a bit tricky. My immediate response was yes, the death penalty is appropriate for the sexual assault of a minor. Then I started to think about age of consent. In New York age of consent is 17. If two people who are dating, one being 15, one being 16, and the 16-year-old turns 17, they are now breaking the law. It gets a little tricky with this so I think it should be on a case-by-case basis. If someone clearly takes advantage of a minor sexually, I don’t think the death penalty should be off the table. When it comes to police officers and public figures, I think the death penalty is appropriate. If a person knowingly and purposely takes another’s life (not in self-defense) the death penalty should be considered. If the death penalty is on the table for taking a life, I think more people would think twice before acting.

I think the Boston bomber should face the death penalty. According to the video link, Dzhokhar killed four people and injured 260 other people. His intent was to kill as many people as possible. I don’t think an evil person like that should have the right to live. The death penalty is what I would have sentenced him with as well. It was a violent crime and caused mass panic in the city of Boston and affected hundreds, if not thousands of peoples life’s forever. In a case like this, I would like to think the death penalty is obvious.

Student response #1 Rahiem Halstead QUESTION 1- I have mixed feelings about the death penalty for criminals who are accused of sexual assault on minors because I never really had the mindset to kill anyone unless it was self defense with my back against the wall.
