Reflection on Research Writing<\/p>\n
Research writing is not only essential but also inevitable in any discipline at the higher education level. Students are trained on various writing styles and concepts that help present their research works in multiple disciplines. Computer science is one of the most complex disciplines many students are afraid to pursue due to its demands and level of learning engagement. Throughout the Computer Science program, I have been lucky to be exposed to understanding all vital prerequisites needed in writing research projects. These writing elements include identifying sources of information related to the research problem, logically presenting data, and important considerations that authors make while writing.<\/p>\n
Before a writer starts their work, it is critical to understand the purpose of their writing, the problem they are out to address, and the research design to employ. The writer needs to read various articles related to their research topics and narrow the significant idea to achieve the intended results. To write a good computer science paper, it is inevitable to start with writing a short outline to guide your writing process. Once this is done, writers can now write the introduction of their paper where they define the topic, highlight the problem of the study, method of data collection, and a clear thesis statement that highlights the relationship between the research problem and the author\u2019s hypothesis (Root, 2021).\u00a0<\/p>\n
Throughout the semester, we have gained tremendous research writing knowledge that I applied in my projects, which will also help me in future research works. Before I started this course, I had no idea how to explore research topics and express ideas logically through writing. Writing skills enhance academic literacy and determine the learner’s success in future research works. In my previous research papers, I used the skills gained in the class to present the information clearly and logically. For instance, in my first research paper, I was able to identify a gap where only a few students are willing to pursue computer programming compared to other courses. With that in mind, I formulated a straightforward research question, explored past studies related to my topic under the literature review section, explored data collection methodology, then presented data analysis and discussion. In this way, the information is presented to allow the logical flow of ideas, from introducing the problem to recommending the solutions.<\/p>\n
A successful research writer should identify the source of their information and acknowledge the past researchers by referencing the sources. We have learned about academic credibility, where the writer should not use the data of another writer without realizing them. There is a lot of information found in peer-reviewed scholarly articles stored incredible academic journals. When writing a computer science research paper, writers must present the report of authors of all articles used and publication dates. It is essential to compare various studies and mention their contributions to your current study. In my first research paper on why students avoid pursuing computer programing, I used some information from the work of two authors, Ali and Smith, who surveyed teaching programming language in 2014 (Ali & Smith, 2014). I made sure I mentioned their surnames and the year of their study then referenced their information in the bibliography section.<\/p>\n
Data collection skills are an essential element of research writing in computer science because the information presented should be consistent with the literature you showed in your study. There are various research designs used with researchers depending on the problem of the study. While the qualitative study design derives its information from academic articles, journals, and data stored in various institutions, quantitative research design focuses on data collected through interviews, surveys, and analysis of the same data objectively. In my first study, I surveyed a sample of 100 students who enrolled in computer programming courses but later dropped out. Data collection requires the research to be aware of ethical considerations, especially when dealing with human subjects. We are required to conceal the privacy of all subjects interviewed and also obtain their prior consent before involving them. Therefore, all the information I presented in my researches did not contain any personal data of the subjects involved in my studies (Alvesson, Mats & Sandberg, 2013).<\/p>\n
Data analysis is arguably the most important skill that a researcher should possess. The essence of data collection is to test the hypothesis that the researcher developed in the initial stage of the work. Data analysis will either confirm if the hypothesis is true or false and enable the researcher develop conclusions of their research. In my first work, I tried to analyze the data collected from my sample population to establish the possible relationships between different variables and the patterns of occurrences. In my discussion section, I established the implications of the results from the data collected to see if the research question is answered and the objective of the study achieved. During the semester, we learned how to compare the results of the data collected with other studies mentions in the literature review. This is an important skill because it confirms if your study has achieved its objective or not.<\/p>\n
It is important to acknowledge the limitations of your study. Study limitations present the elements that might make the results of the study less accurate. In my previous study, I applied qualitative study technique where the reliability of the information gained relied on respondent\u2019s accuracy. Sometimes, respondents give insufficient or false information especially when the interview is consuming their time. This is one of the biggest challenges associated with qualitative study technique.<\/p>\n
To be successful in computer science, you must possess the ability to identify various issues affecting specific results and intelligently find the information from multiple sources to develop a solution. Computer science is an ever-growing field that requires all the people in this field to think critically, evaluate issues, develop solutions, and test results. The research and writing knowledge I have acquired in this course will help me later in my career. Making daily decisions necessitates the capacity to integrate, evaluate, criticize, and draw conclusions from several sources. When faced with a challenging circumstance, I will be able to gather many sources of information, synthesize disparate and contradictory opinions, and determine which is the most accurate. All of these skills are identical to those required while writing a research report in terms of research and thinking.<\/p>\n
